ETS Light, NOT ETM though
Hi Guys, Im sorry to jump right in with a problem on my first post, I've been a "lurker" on here for sometime.
Ok, so I have a 2002 Volvo C70 convertible 2.4T auto which developed an ETM problem- this was replaced with a yellow label model at the local Volvo main dealers. After collecting the car the ETS light came back on and the car stuttered at idle but generally drove fine. I returned to the garage, that morning it wouldn't start for ages either, when on the diagnostics they discovered a code that lasted 0.02 of a second that morning- starting issue perhaps? anyway he said it was related to the MAF and asked me to return the week after to arrange further investigations. He reset the codes at this point. For good measure I replaced the MAF with a Bosch unit. We drove happily around for a few weeks with no further problems so didn't go back to the garage. My partner drives this car on her 4 mile commute so it doesn't even really get warm. I took it on the motorway (within 20 minutes, ETS light on) but no symptoms. the light goes out after a couple of days. I have an autel code reader and this shows now faults. This now happens on every long journey but there are no symptoms and the light goes out but we are now looking to sell the car as I need something a little less thirsty for work but want to get this sorted before putting it up for sale. Its had a new battery, a new coil pack on the 1st cylinder (this was done when we first bought the car and not relevant to the fault) New Bosch MAF, New ETM and software. Im not sure where else to look, can anyone help? |

As you didn't take it back as requested I'd play dumb and take it back now and see if the dealers can find any codes. Tell them it's been fine but only on short runs and you've only just used it for longer runs the last few days......

Back to the dealer. Light went out before I got there and no codes stored. Still none the wiser. Any other tips. What could it be?

It broke down again. This time complete limp mode. No power and severe misfire. Still no codes when the RAC came out. His thoughts were lambda sensor. I've no replaced this and the car starts fine and runs ok but the ETS light keeps coming and going. My partner says it doesn't sound right but I can't tell- I don't drive it that often. It's never sounded the same as my 97 V70 with the same engine. I think I'm going to take it to a Volvo specialist- it's 45 mins to my nearest dealer and a lot cheaper at a local Volvo specialist. I'll keep you posted.

Finally got it to the dealer, they were really helpful- especially as I turned up unannounced.. I work odd shifts so its difficult to plan things!
Anyway, after diagnostics they told me the throttle pedal is to blame for my ETS light now... bonus as no charge for the service. I just need to replace the pedal! Im wondering if I have to get exactly the same part number or will others fit? Ive seen a few on ebay but one digit different on the part number! |

The saga continues, after another two visits to the dealer it's still not working. Replaced the pedal and it made no difference, a software upgrade was done and they said that fixed it... Until I collected it. They had it for a week after this and replaced the ETM connectors. Test drive it and it was fine.... Until I collected it. Losing patience on this now. They are stuck and I can't rely on my car at all. Anyone have any ideas?

It sounds strange but if the 2.4T is intercooled check the big old pipe underneath the car ... Mine looked intact but as soon as you wiggled the old clip on it, it fell apart ... under higher pressure it leaked and put the eml light on.
Also check your LTFT values (Long Term Fuel Trim) .. i use torque on my phone for that. Took me a while to find it ... different car when I fixed it! Especially as it cost me 50p ! DOH ! Iain |
