Default Soot Filter

My car is very hard to start and the SOOT FILTER FULL SEE MANUAL keeps coming up. Once started it runs really well. I've been told the DPF might need replacing as this can be a reason for the starting problems. Any idea how big a job this is and/or rough cost please? I've already been charged nearly £600 for new glow plugs, battery and goodness knows what else - not by a Volvo garage I hasten to add. Any help will be gratefully received.

Under normal driving conditions a soot filter never gets full

If it fills up then it is often a symptom of too much soot being generated by the engine as a result of some other problem, such as air leak in the charged air pipe, or oil burning in the turbo

You will need to either perform a manual regeneration of the soot filer, or if that does not work, replace the soot filter.
The longer you wait, the worse it gets.
Manual regeneration can be triggered by VIDA, but only if the motor is at normal operating temperature and has no faults.

There is also a small chance that the pressure sensors before and/or after the soot filter are faulty, leading to a wrong fault message.

As Swiss says the message is indicating that there is a fault elsewhere causing the soot filter to fill up.

If you simply fit a new DPF without finding the underlying cause it will fill up again.

Thank you. The garage said they did a forced regeneration and I have taken it for a long drive on 3 occasions until the message went out. I now have a back up battery on permanent trickle charge as it turns over for ages before it gives in. Seems like I had better visit my Volvo garage instead of having the breakdown people book me in to a place they recommended. At least they won't charge for everything under the bonnet while making wild guesses. The most frustrating part is that my beloved beastie that got written off by some prat who slammed into the front of it still starts before I've hardly turned the key - it's got no radiator, bonnet creased and everything below it and to both sides has been mangled. I know who I'd like to mangle... this rather upset, almost retired old biddy thanks you very much for your input and taking the time to reply.

That sounds the best plan.

Get a garage with Vida ( Volvo Diagnostics Tool ) to see what is actually wrong.

It may well turn out to be something relatively simple and takes the guesswork out of it. Guessing becomes hugely expensive very quickly and often without a result.
