Default Newbie S60 advice please

Hi, i am new to the forum & am going to look at a 02 plate S60 D5 SE auto tomorrow & am hoping for some tips on what to look out for.
The car has got a decent history & has covered 99,000 miles.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

There is loads on this so have a search around, there is so much info and knowledge on this forum there is nearly always an answer to any question.

At that mileage the cam belt should have been changed, if not its over due by miles as well as age. The auixlary belt, tentioner and idler should have been changed also

Check for any movement on the aux belt. Any movement indicates the alternator clutch pulley could be starting to fail.

Make sure the auto box works fully. Test drive the car until it's porperly warm as any faults show best when warm. The fluid should be a nice red colour if not it needs replacing.

Check all the electronics work as they should. Early models did have a few issues make sure the instrument cluster works as it should Ect.

The intercooler is also a common failure so check for any black smoke out the back when you give it some throttle

Listen for suspension noise as normally at this mileage most components are still original.

The rest is just the usual used car stuff there may be other items I have missed so do your research by reading the threads and you will be soon spot if its worth purchasing or its just a polished turd.

The most important thing to check that's been done are the cambelt and aux belt with all pulleys and tensioners.
They're due at 96k or 10 years whichever is sooner. Hopefully they've all been swapped with genuine.
You could really do with taking some form of diagnostics to to see how sweet things are running under the bonnet.
Suspension components should still be good at those miles so if you're getting many knocks or clunks and it doesn't feel tight, it may have been driven hard.
It's all reasonably priced and relatively simple DIY stuff but very expensive if you pay someone else.

How much is the car?

Thanks for the tips, it has given me some ideas what to look for. The car is up for £2000 which seems strong money for the age of it but if it is right I would rather spend the money up front instead of paying for it later.

Graham has covered most things well,a big clue would be to floor it for smoke out from exhaust, also check for any messages on computer.

Also check if the steering pulses while going around a roundabout – this could point to a steering rack problem which is costly to fix, or simply that the owner has used the wrong PAS fluid (red/orange is wrong, green is right). Mine did that, and fortunately for me a good flush with the correct fluid has cured it.

Well it was worth the short journey as a learning curve but the auto diesel turned out to be a manual diesel which isn't any good for me. The better news is i am now convinced that i am looking at the right car for me so my search continues.

Thanks again for the info.
