Default rumble at idle

Hello all, I am new to volvo and bought a new xc60 before christmas and love it to bits apart from one gremlin.

I had a saab previouly and it was in the garage around 30 time over 18months for various engine and vibration problems so very sensative to motoring at the moment.

I seem to be getting a stammer or searching effect at idle (720 ish rpm) more so when it is warm and in heavy traffic.

Is this normal for a new 205bhp d5 and is my saab experience still haunting me and making me find problems that are just deisel engine norms. I did read about noisy d5 engines before buying th car but on test drive didnt notice anything!

Had the garage look at on 3000mile saftey check and he said it was particle filter cleaning iteself but its happening on all journeys!

Help me enjoy motoring again!

Have to say that my D5 is rock steady at idle with no variation in speed ~800 rpm (ish) or in sound. The engine is a bit noisier than my last d5 (163) but that had done a lot more miles and I assume that this will quieten as it wears in

if the engine is 'hunting' as you suggest it does sound that something is amiss

I no what you mean about "looking for faults". I had an awful experience with Land Rover and a Discovery 3. It nearly went to court until they gave me my money back and £500 compensation but the experience does make you question every noise and strange sound. I went to BMW after getting rid of the LR and I must of drove them mad for the first month taking the car back for faults I thought it had but they were 100% supportive and totally understood the scaring LR had left on me.

My advice is take it to back to the dealers and ask one of the mechanic's to go out with you in traffic so you can point out the issue and they can see it for themselve's. I'm sure they will be more than happy to do this and put you mind at rest.

Thanks guys! I did take it in last week and mechanic didnt notice it, even when it did search at idle and i pointed it out, he gave me the particle filter clening itself story but surley that cant be the case on all journeys? He took it out for drive and didint have any further comments. It was not that bad that day but left the garage and it was making a racket. Lifted bonnett and they had left oil cap of and had to find it in front of engine. That didnt help my gremlins.

My saab story went on for ages and everyone though i was mad then it went in for something else, a recall item, and they found loads wrong including shot drop links at front and stayed in garage for 10 days. My case was rested but could drive it anyfurther!

I dont belive some mechanics really care, but that is my bad experince. I will try another dealer and get second opinion. I have proved I am right before so will percevere. I chose volvo thinking this was all behind me guess that is cars for you!

Most of the big dealers don’t really care now a day’s as it’s all run by accountants and they want to make money when they sell you a car, keep their fingers crossed they don’t have too much trouble with it during the warranty period (if they do they claim all rectification costs back from the manufacturer) .

Then Dealer and Manufacturer rub their hands when the warranty period runs out because they can charge you a fortune to fix faults on their products.

They are all the same, read any forum and the more expensive brands are the worst.

I do not experience any hunting but my idle revs seem lower than I expected at 700rpm. My D5 205 is noisier than I had hoped but think it is now bedding in having now done 1000miles. It's horrible when you know there's something but the dealer does not see it, so good luck, keep on at them...
