It just boils down to people being plain arrogant and stupid, and unfortunately there is no cure for that!

If I am ever in a situation where I think there might be the possibility of door contact, I am ginger as feck - if you go careful even a small door contact will not cause damage, even more so if you have the door under control.

It's the plebs who just blindly swing doors open, or allow their kids in the back to do similar. I have my V60 done in the 3rd day of owning her :-(

If I had kids, the child locks would be on, and I would be in control of opening the doors.

We have rent a garage by our apartment. Of course we don't need that. But in common parking of our apartments, neighbours don't care about your car (and most of them about their own cars). There is many examples and I can talk and talk and talk, but they are so dumb, if they got an accident when parking a car and drawn your car, he will get out of the car, he will look at his car, at mine car and he will go home. That's all. What is going on in our parking when winter comes I don't want to say. So right now we have a garage by rent and sleep well. Of course it cost, but it much cheaper than repair my car every time.

A few rambling thoughts.

Apparently you can't fight inevitability and the increased density of world population with its inherently gregarious nature and associated toys of varying scale.

Visualise the (never seen?) scenario of parking in a totally empty car park with undersized spaces only to return and find the only two additional cars in the car park residing one each side of yours and a small dent in either side of your car to confirm their appearance.

Perhaps it might be seen as fortunate by some that people still buy nice new shiny cars, take that first hit of massive depreciation, use them and iron out all the development bugs, whilst cosseting and at the same time being paranoid about where to park them in an effort to avoid the tiniest bit of minor damage (which they then have repaired), only to become bored with their pride and joy to subsequently reject and dispose of it and to repeat the process over again.

In an effort to preserve some last vestige of sanity some might be seen to take some advantage of this prior scenario by seeking out one of these well kept rejected examples (perhaps even a used Volvo?) at reasonable cost and to further adopt a less "perfectionist" attitude to life thereby bringing some level of reduction in paranoia and a propensity towards a more relaxed attitude to life, (perhaps that's also to some degree called giving up!).

At the end of the day all these cars, with infinitesimally small exception, end up in the scrap yard anyway.

I certainly don't let myself get to a level of paranoia where I feel nervous about taking a car out (my cousin has just bought a new 911 Targa, he's in that mode :-D )

But, regardless of the vehicle I've owned, its age etc. when its been in my custody I've looked after it and any damage to it caused through negligence or arrogance annoys the hell out of me. Yes it will end up in a scrap yard one day, but for the days I am owning it I want it to look nice.

In short, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em?

Indeed it's my car, I paid good money that I earnt for my car (It's not on PCP,PCH, or a company car) yes it's filthy dirty today but it's going for a wash in a short while (I'd do it myself but pressed for time) & I like to keep it looking nice for as long as possible.

When it's time to trade it in for something newer, my looking after it will earn me a better trade in.

I just wish people were more respectful, I was sooo tempted to leave a stroppy note on the Nissan Note the other day stating that I'd taken photo's of the damage & the clear dark blue paint marks on the edge of their door to send to my insurance company & they'd be in touch. Trouble is If I'd reported it to my insurer I'd get flagged as having a claim so get clobbered on that front as well.

I did see somebody literally scrap themselves down the side of a car about a year ago at the Metro Centre & then the woman driving get out to inspect her handywork before driving off to the other side of the car park & parking up to go shopping. As I heard the scrape happening took photo's of the Woman, her Car & Reg, then once she'd parked took further photo's showing the paint damage on both her & the victims car.

Left the owner of the damaged car a note saying I'd seen it all & have evidence with my Email & phone number. Next morning a nice chap phoned me thanking me for my trouble & would I send the pictures to his insurance company.

Didn't hear anything from the insurance co. after I'd filled in a statement & sent pic's but the owner sent me a nice email saying the car needed work on all panels down one side & thanking me for saving him a massive bill.

Why can't someone invent magnetic ding pads that you ca put on your doors when you park. My volvo has got 3 hefty dents in my doors. My baby has been damaged and will cost a lot to sort. People are so careless. So someone please invent removable door protector pads.

Guy I know didn't want to park with the morons in the normal spaces, having just completed a full nut and bolt rebuild of his GM Saab cabrio, so he parked in a parent & spawn space and ate the £70 fine.

I have seen cars parked across 2 bays for the same reason. If the bay dividing line is central of the car you have half a bay each side to open doors.
