Finally put my ‘05 D5 onto the A/C machine; although it works apparently fine, seeing as it’s been 13 years since it was last charged I figured it would be worth a check.
The machine drains and weighs the gas that’s in there, pulls a vacuum for 20 minutes and if that’s fine, pumps new gas back in. The spec for my V70 is 700g total mass of gas, but it was only able to recover 468g. That shouldn’t be a great surprise, 160k miles of bending flexibles is going to do that. (It transpires that many vehicles now have a service interval for the A/C working fluid as well as a desiccant device that needs regular changing.)

Nett result is that colder air comes out sooner, and presumably those kW that I’m losing to A/C are at least doing so vaguely more efficiently. Important in these sticky times this summer....

Those AC machines are great. Not only do they extract and weigh the refrigerant, they filter it and ,obviously, recycle it. They can be set to add leak detection dye and they reinstall the proper amount of PAG oil to the system.

I also refilled my AC today, sadly I don't have a proper machine just a low side gauge/valve and a can of 134a/PAG... However with the engine running & AC on, the low side showed about 8psi (it's not been that cold since we got the car, so I expected that) and it's taken about 450g out of the canister to be up around where I want it.

I was toying with the idea of charging with R290 as I have on some previous vehicles, but as this is our first really nice car I thought it best to stick with what's required. So, in short, today I recharged our AC... (And bought a CV joint & the parts to fix the HU850)

It has to do with the permitted zones and obscuring lines of sight.
A good description/diagram can be found here

.other dash cams are available!

well I didn't know that, so it should have passed as its well in 40mm of the zone,
so depends on the MOT person i suppose, i'll move it to the side, so it's blocking the view as they want !!

Was it 8psi low side before refilling? I agree about staying with 134a if you can find bottles, unless vacuum everything (including the oil for 134a) and giving it a fresh start.

Yes, before refilling, AC running. Think it's around 35psi now IIRC. And temperature at the vents getting down around 2c

Got the CV joint & new aux belt to fit shortly so that should be my "what I did today" all being well.
