V70 / XC70 towbar
Does anyone know if the genuine Volvo detachable towbar is the same for the V70 and XC70?
I'm guessing there may be a difference in the height of the tow ball or angle of the bar but I could be wrong. |

In short, it will fit and be compliant with the law.
There is along list of part numbers and differences between the bars on the XC and V and then differences within the model range. I did a huge amount of digging because I had a Volvo detachable on my XC70 and it was replaced with a V70 and I kept the Towbar. The XC bar is rated higher and as such has a round centre bar as opposed to the V having box section. The tow ball height is different between bars but it still falls within height range. For reference, the bar I used was from a 2009 XC70 with 4c suspension And it is now on a V70 2013 D4 redesign with Nivromats. All fitted fine.. Terry. |

Thanks Terry,
I'm not bothered about the round centre bar as opposed to the box section. I guess it is still designed for the bumper/crash bar to go over the top of it? Do you know how different the heights were? presumably the xc ball needs to be lower in relation to the bumper height than on the V? therefore is the ball height ultimately lower on the V than the XC using the XC bar........ hope that makes sense! |

Yes, the crash bar fitted straight back on with no issues, The ball height should be between 350mm - 420mm with the vehicle in a laden state. (according to most towbar sites) With the bar on my V70 the ball height is 370mm unladen but as I have self levelling rear suspension it should not drop when laden as the car will compensate for the load. I never measured the height on the XC before I removed it, but other members here did give me measurements from their cars of between 440mm and 460mm unladen It's worth remembering that having self levelling suspension will make a difference in laden height and that my car is an R design which has a lower ride height than a standard V70 Terry |

For some models, Volvo have offered different tow bars for cars with or without Nivomat. Those without levelling have a higher starting point.
