Default Drive Shaft Woes.

My mobile mechanic ( who I have used for years ) popped over last week to fit new suspension arms to my T5 ( ph1 p80 as per sig pic).

Doing drivers side the shaft 'fell out' as they do. He cleaned it up and refitted. Later he went for a test drive and on a left hander the shaft came out again
Once home he found the casing (?) that holds the bearings in had cracked.
So now he is looking for a new shaft for me. He's had 2 delivered but they are not compatible . He has the old one to offer up and no luck so far.
Anyone breaking and have one that would fit please?

I had a similar issue when replacing the O/S drive shaft a few years back. The garage informed me that the part ordered that should have fitted had different splines on one side, the second part had the correct splines on the wheel side, but not the other. In the end they had to go to a breakers yard with the part that came out of the car to match one up.

Not sure how true it was, but i have no reason to doubt what the mechanic (ex Volvo) told me, but he said that later V70 P1's can often have parts from P2 v70's as they made things fit if p1 parts had been used. Seems my P1 is a very late P1 as some items in the engine bay are the same as a P2 !!

We think we have the correct one now. He got it from J&R. He didn't think it was right as different to the the 'dead' one. Queried with J&R. They contacted Volvo to confirm and Volvo said "Yes".
Mechanic is coming over tomoz to try..... Fingers crossed!

Hi Paul,

Is the correct one a JR91?
Last week I successfully fitted a JR91 to the LHS drive on a 1998 V70 T5 Auto

Thanks
Steve

Steve, it was a DS633 and it fitted.

It's the right side (UK off-side). It goes to full lock both ways and stays in place.

That's the good news out of the way.

But, there was no seal supplied for the gearbox end, and now it is leaking ATF. So a seal will be ordered later today and Chris will have to come back and fit that.

The odd thing is that the old and new shafts are different. J&R confirmed their was was correct by speaking to Volvo and it fits.

It turns out the the old one has grooves cut in a spiral effect at the gearbox end. Apparently these are for a MANUAL gearbox. The oil flows to lubricate a seal and the grooves draw the oil back away so as to not over lubricate?

So for some odd reason at some stage somebody fitted a MANUAL shaft to my AUTO.

Weird I have a feeling this was one of those 'Friday afternoon cars'.

Hi Paul,

Please let us know how you get on.

I am particularly interested because I cannot find left and right shafts for my
V70 1998 T5 auto FWD
on j and r, and they don't seem to want or be able to help.

So if the right hand driveshaft that they have supplied to you works, and if I can somehow confirm (eg from the Volvo part numbers on the white Volvo bar code label on the axle) that it should be the same as mine, then I will get one too.

Steve

Hi Steve. It turns out the seal is a Volvo only item. Chris came back today as he needed to take a measurement ......
He said J&R have been very helpful to him, maybe cos he's in the trade......
I will let you know once this is solved (if). Then maybe you ask them for the link to the corresponding near side one? .
Good luck. And I will update.

Chris , my mechanic has been to Volvo with the 'new' shaft to get the seal for it this morning.
Despite Volvo UK confirming with J&R that the one they sent is correc, Volvo France say 'non ce n'est pas le bon'.
So confusion reigns this one..... Now awaiting an update from Chris......

The gearbox seal was weeping on my manual gearbox (Sept 1999 V70) and Volvo initially supplied the wrong part.
There are 2 very different sizes so it was obviously wrong when I had everything dismantled <sigh>
OTOH J&R supplied the correct CV joint for the same car recently.

Hi Paul,

While you are working on your 1999 V70 T5 Auto, I have been working on my 1998 V70 T5 Auto.

I think they take the same shafts. (My white Volvo label indicates 9163584 on the RH shaft and 9163585 on the LH shaft).

Photo of my RH shaft is attached in case it helps.
