Partial slip (or partial lock-up) is where the a small amount of slip for a short period of time (a couple of seconds) it enabled to improve percieved throttle response at low RPM without having to downshift. i.e. if you are cruising at 30 mph in 4th at ~ 1,500 rpm and increase throttle, it would allow the revs to rise by 200-300 immediately this helps spin the turbo up faster.

I've been trying to find an article to link to to explain it but without success. I think it was only on those cars that don't have a sport mode enabled by shifting the gearlever left - my '08 XC70 did it but my 15 XC60 doesn't seem to.

Thanks! Was hoping it was this one, heard it’s more reliable than the power shift. I gather it’s recommended to get the gearbox oil replaced ?

I changed my water pump at 86k and it was still In very good condition so it’s likely given the stories that the pumps last a long time.

They are however about £75 quid and with cambelts at 100k miles you would need to be a complete cretin to run a 40k new car and not spend £75.00 quid on a genuine Pump.

I have just bought a c30 d5 auto with the 5 speed and also have a 6 speed auto xc90 and they drive totally different even though they have the same engine.

The 5 speed is a lot more direct with no slip at all but the 6 speed definitely slips a little, tannaton is spot on with it, it feels nicer to drive and the extra gear helps to get it moving better especially as the xc90 is a heavy car.

The powershift I believe a dual clutch like the VW DSG where as the auto gearbox in the XC90 is a conventional auto with torque converter. I had the 5 speed in the P2 V70, sold it at 150k miles and it was fine, I changed the oil in it at about 120K. Now have the 6 speed in the P3 V70 but it's only on about 40K.

I think they are generally reliable but do benefit from an oil change when oil starts to lose it cherry red appearance. When that happens depends upon driving style, if you are towing and the climate.

The powershift is indeed a DSG-a-like Ford unit and was fitted to some Volvo's with 4-cylinder Ford engines (petrol and diesel). These included the C30/S40/V50/C70 range and P3 V70/P2 S60 and more recently the new V40 etc. but not an XC90 or AWD models.
