MOT and coronavirus
Forgive me if this is common knowledge, just had a message from DVSA re expired MOTs. If your car, van or motorcycle MOT is due from 30th March, it will be extended by six months.
Still needs to be roadworthy as before. Best to check on DVSA site if unclear, keep well, Jim |

I've just checked this on the DVLA site. Anything due from 30th March will be extended. Anything due prior to 30th March won't be and will need a test or SORN

I'm more concerned about the service on mine, which is due the same time as the MOT. I'd normally get the dealer to do it, but I may order a full service kit and keep it on stand by in case I end up doing it myself.

Question:-
You have a vehicle on Sorn on which the MOT has expired some time ago. Can you simply insure it and tax it from 1st April - as if it was MOT exempt? Along similar lines:- You have acquired a vehicle which has been off the road for some time, but was simply not Sorned. Can you again insure and tax this as you would do with an MOT exempt vehicle? To keep the debate as uncomplicated as possible, we will assume that there are no known defects with the vehicle. By ‘no known’, I mean defects which a driver could reasonably be expected to be aware of. |

There's no reading between the lines with this - if it's not specifically written down, you can't do it. |

Similarly there are no HGV mot being done and they have been extended for 6 months, however the vehicles must still have their 6 or 13 weekly Safety Maintenance Inspection and any defects found rectified to remain road legal.

I only booked my MoT a few days back, for the 18th April.
I'll have to ring him and cancel. He's a small independent trader and is likely to try to remain open, so I feel sorry for him, but so it goes....

There's going to be a bit of a rush at the end of this, I'd rather keep my cars tested if there is the opportunity to do that without taking any risks.
