Following it being parked up for 6 days, I've been out in the car. As predicted - despite being charged for about 18 hours - the system warned of low battery power as soon as I inserted the key. However the stop/start then surprised me by becoming active in less than 5 minutes, so it seems the system was only confused about the battery charge for a very short time and soon got itself appraised of the fully charged battery status.

I'm really not sure that I need a replacement battery, although obviously a 4.5 year old battery will have lost some capacity. I believe the stop/start non-availability and low power warnings come about due to the manner in which I tend to use the car, with the battery draining significantly during the run of days that I leave it parked up. I also reckon that the system is designed to deactivate the stop/start at the merest excuse!

Stop/start works only when battery's State of Charge is above a certain threshold, cca. 80-82% SoC. If you loose more than 1-2-3% SoC overnight, battery might be due for replacement, batteries age prematurely nowadays due to start/stop and intensive charge/discharge bursts under brake energy regeneration.

Battery SoC can be displayed with app 'Car Scanner ELM OBD2', you should also display Battery Current while driving to check if alternator is working properly. FYI: battery in the car is charged up to 82-85% SoC only.

With that tiny margin I'm amazed that anyone's stop/start ever works! PS - I'm always grateful for your very specific and detailed information.

Surely the point of EFB technology (and more so with AGM) is to mitigate the effects of repeated stop/start and so extend the useful battery life? This doesn't seem to be playing out...

I used to load test batteries used in fire alarm systems the big systems in stadiums etc have racks of truck batteries they get an annual test and spend most of their time sat on charge...... at 75% I think of rated capacity they were swapped. They were discharge tested using a special meter connected to a laptop and although it gave a pass/fail you could check the discharge curves Interesting reading (if you like that sort of thing) I used to test my batteries from time to time if your interested put it through a capacity discharge test.

Lots of “pub” evidence about batteries lots of “change it after 3 years” etc load testing over a period at regular intervals may surprise you.....

My stop starts works pretty much all the time but battery is 2 years old car does very few short trips but does sit for days not moving regularly.

There is a facility built into the car for this , activated with the Vida diagnostic kit ...
