Yes I used a 9v PP3 battery and that worked fine!

Thinking on this, if one were to obtain an epb plug with a pair of wires, fit a pair of crocodile clips to said wires and use this to connect from the slave battery to the motor. Reversing polarity would then be just a case of swapping the clips and there would be no risk of damage to the motor conections.
I have found a squirt of silicon furniture polish on connectors makes taking it apart much easier next time.

A heads up to anyone attempting to do this with the method of removing the EPB motor and manually rewinding...

I was working on my brother-in-law's audi A8 which has the same rear brake set-up and I tried the method of using external 12V power to rewind the motor. What I didn't know was that one of the two wires I was using had a knick in it and would not work. I was in a hurry (it was very dark and late) so I resorted to taking the EPB off. All went well until I attempted to re-tighten the two torx bolts (because, again, I was in a hurry). I tightened the first of two and felt a bit of resistance at the end but ignored it (mistake #1). I then went to tighten the second one but I got lots of resistance about half way through tightening...again I ignored (because I was in a hurry and wasn't thinking). CRACK...the plastic mounting piece with the hole through it cracked off the EPB...nice. I couldn't figure out what happened until the next day: I had not take the time to line up the splines in the motor with the opening in the caliper mech. As a result, they did not engage and I was unable to tighten the two torx bolts all the way in - I tried though. Moral #1: take your time, moral #2: when something feels tight too early, for god's sake stop and check what you are doing!!! FYI: Audi wanted $700CAD for a new motor assy. We got one for $100CAD from a wreckyard.

Terrific pics and guide.
I have a 13 plate XC60 (38K) and am proposing to replace the rear disks and pads. I've done tons of jobs like this. Is replacing the disk easy once the caliper is off?
I am impressed that the electronic parking brake can be wound back manually.
I notice you are in Hudds - excellent. I can get pads and disks from a reputable factor in HD for £100 inc VAT!!!! I've had a price from Volvo!!!
Any more tips in particular the EPB wind back and any torque values for the bolts.
