V50 General : D2 1.6D D4162T Correct Timing Belt Interval is 87.5K miles

I have it confirmed from Volvo that the timing belt change interval is 87,500 miles & not 150,000 miles as some may believe it to be! There is an advisory that Volvo brought the interval forward towards the end of April 2014 here: http://workshopsupportguide.volvocar..._41en37_ir.pdf

Just thought I should make you aware; apparently Volvo haven't issued a recall, but rather are including the timing belt replacement when your vehicle goes in for it's next service! This of course would only take place if you are having the vehicle serviced at Volvo dealerships! So be warned & be aware ;-)

Great, the news for us 1.6D owners simply gets better and better so proving that the Ford/Peugeot/Citroen supplied angines are weak compared to decently designed and built ones.

The cost of maintaining Volvo's "eco" models is so high it completely negates the point of buying them. That combined with the MPG falling so far short (about 25 to be precise) makes it less than a sound option for most.

Thanks for this info. The service cost indicator on Volvo UK website now includes the timing belt replacement at 87,500 miles and quotes £405 for this service.

How come then Clan that Volvo are now saying 87.5k miles? I have this info & confirmation from them both verbally & electronically that it is 87.5k miles timing belt kit interval for the 1.6D Drive-e 115ps Stop / Start with D4162T engine; this applies not only to the v50, but also other models which use the same engine configuration; (Ford / Peugeot / Citron PSA / DV6 block). Clan, can you provide solid evidence that the interval is 150k miles? My v50 (2011 60 plate), is on 114k & i'm booked in to get it changed as i'm already playing roulette!!

1.6D badged cars are NOT the D2 they are the D4164T which is still on 150000 or 10 years

The D4162T is the D2 which is now on 87500 miles or 10 years ..

I wouldnt worry too much these engines have been on volvos for 10 years now and no particular problems with cam belt life .. We need to know WHY volvo have gone to 87500 miles for the D4162T ( D2) cam belt

Very good question, we do indeed need to know why. I bought my motor 2 weeks ago & assumed the timing belt change was 150k; then I found a post on here stating 87.5k. I then began getting twitchy & i'm quite ocd about finding the exact correct info. I found that after speaking to 3 dealers, nothing was clear! One told me it was brought down to 84k from 150k, & that mine is an 85k interval because mine has "84" in the vin??? Another stated 86k; one more a bit closer to home stated it's still 150k! It seems the dealers are also a bit uncertain & twitchy with what is actually correct! That's why I contacted Volvo directly & also spoke to someone who has access to their technical team. Ultimately I like to look after my motors & know them inside out; I hate uncertainty & assumptions as these are what bite you in the a***. This forum is a great resource btw ;-)

Where's the best place to buy the drivebelt from if you want to change it yourself? I've seen as cheap as £13 for Contitech branded belts but thought the belt would be a lot more expensive......


Just went through the Haynes manual and didn't realise it was so simple to replace.

A Volvo main dealer parts department and ask for discount.
I'd make your generic part savings on less critical areas of the car.

Just went through the Haynes manual and didn't realise it was so simple to replace.

Always replace with a timing belt kit as the kit contains tensioner & idler pulleys etc; also, if the timing belt arrangement also drives the water pump, replace water pump as well! It's not necessarily the timing belt which fails, but rather the tensioner / idler / water pump bearings which can throw the belt off / make the belt loose if these bearing components breakdown / fail because they are becoming end of life. Gates timing belt kits are amongst the best & in some applications they do a kit which includes water pump. This is one of the most important components of the engine & in my mind it's quality of materials over cost in this area
