Had a 57 plate myself that I bought for the Mrs and kept it for 3 years - 80k miles later. Only problem we had was alternator went at 160k, plus consumables (brakes, tyres, one wheel bearing, bulbs...) Ultra comfortable seats, very quick to warm up, very practical car and nice to drive. The electrics are very reliable - expensive to sort when they go wrong I grant you but reliable otherwise. No rust whatsoever when we sold it in Feb this year with 180k on it.

cant fault the drive exept perhaps for the firm ride[on 18"] fuel cons appx 40mpg which wasnt great nor dire either-but i cant get my head around the 4wd xc70 i have doing only 2mpg less as its heavier, more drag, bigger, higher etc-but thats another "discussion" lol |

Sure, the car is probably worth a 1/10 of the new price but that's depreciation on any new car. At least the depreciation you suffer will be significantly less than what your dad has had to bear. Moving to a newer car just means you will be further up the depreciation curve and stand to lose more money than where you are now.
And as has been stated earlier your car is a known quantity - your dad has owned it since practically new and no doubt cherished it. Moving to a newer used car then becomes a game of chance as unless it's your Dad's again it's unlikely you'll have the same transparency. So, unless the car is no longer serves your purposes - too big, too expensive to run - and you're not fussed about having the latest gadgets I would hang onto it . Just keep the regular upkeep on it and budget some money each month as you would for any other car as contingency for repairs. However, be mindful when it begins to become a money pit. My 2011 D5 SE Lux has 207k and is still going strong. It has been replaced by a 2015 XC70 D4 AWD SE Lux only because I wanted the newer toys in a chunkier '70 model.

An update to this thread...
I part-ex'd the car. Had served my family well (was my Dad's car first and he owned from 6 months old) and I owned for the last two years +. I decided to get something newer. So I now drive a 65 plate Seat Leon Sport Tourer (Estate) FR 2.0 TDI 184ps manual. Some nice toys. LED Matrix headlights. Apple CarPlay. Smaller. Lighter. Cheaper on fuel. Same range, but smaller tank. Handles really well. Sports suspension. But not as premium feeling, as well screwed together as the Volvo and smaller. One of the last jobs I did with the Volvo was to pop out and buy a Fridge Freezer, which fitted effortlessly in the back. Then took the old one to the tip the following day. Got a set of spare wheels that I will put up for sale shortly, thanks for everyone's comments, great forum, never know might be back in a Volvo one day.

I run them into the ground. All the family run Volvos, they are all beyond or heading for 200K miles. But they get serviced regular, with belts done well before the recommended drop dead dates.
