Need advice on V40 2014 model passenger side headlight
Hi, my vehicle Volvo V40 D2 CC 2015 make had an MOT failure last week as passenger side headlight was out of beam angle. This was rectified 2 years back by local Volvo dealer. They have no clue as how this was fixed then and are suggesting to replace the entire headlight unit for £580+Vat and labour. The issue is that, when engine is on and I dip the beam, both headlights switch to high beam, but when dipped back, passenger side remains as high beam although green indicator on dashboard turns off and right side headlight works perfectly.
Can someone suggest if it's a right approach to go ahead with my local Volvo dealer. |

Hello samanuri.
I don’t understand why you have had no responses to your query in this section, yet when you reposted in the General Volvo section you have received replies. Here is my response, for what it is worth. What position do you have your main lighting switch in when you start up? My daughter has a 2010 XC70 fitted with self levelling headlamps. If your’s is fitted with similar headlamps it will not have a headlamp levelling knob on the dashboard. Conversely, if it has a levelling knob, then it is not fitted with self levelling headlamps. When the light switch is in position 1 the dipped headlamps come on when she starts up and move down then up to settle in their normal position. This can be seen against the garage door (or wall ) if the car is facing that way. But if she has left the headlamps on main beam when she last switched off the engine then the headlamps come on on main beam and she needs to switch to dip beam. Curiously, the same applies if she has the light switch in position 3. We cannot understand why main beam is available with the light switch in position 1. Our logic dictates that main beam should only be available with the light switch in position 3 and only dip beam should be available with the switch in position 1 as the dipped beam is operating as a “running light”. When the light switch is in position 2 the headlamps are off and only the side lights (position lights) are on, and these remain on when the engine is switched off. Our understanding of the self levelling bi-xenon lights fitted to her car is that there are two “filaments” (light sources) lit at all times and there is a “shutter” type device which moves to blank off the main beam when the main beam is not required. In your case it would seem that for some reason that “shutter” is not moving as it should. I do know that a replacement Volvo bi-xenon “bulb” for these headlamps is horribly expensive although cheaper versions are available. I do not know whether the “bulb” unit incorporates the “shutter” but suspect that it does, in which case a replacement “bulb” may solve your problem. Hopefully, someone with more knowledge than I will be able to better advise. Good luck.
