Steering column gaiter/boot
I appreciate that this topic has been done to death on this forum, but I am trying to sort out the cabin noise. However, I am completely unclear on how this part is supposed to go together as I can't see a black plastic bearing, though the noise is definitely coming up through the column hole.
Does anyone have a photo of what it's supposed to look like please? I'm worried that mine has gone the other way and the bearing has come loose and gone down inside the boot and I have made things worse by poking around down there

have no photo but the bearing should pop back into the rubber mount it takes some force to push down.

Thanks for the reply but what I'm saying is I can't see or feel the bearing at all!

When the steering shaft gets rusted, the bearing starts turning against the rubber boot, makes an annoying squealing noise. Sand a bit the steering column, replace (or clean and grease) the bearing, put a bit of synthetic grease around the bearing as well. Don't forget to properly install the boot spring clip.
If you want to quickly get rid of the noise, just use some grease around the bearing. The bearing is inside right at the top of the boot, just squeeze the top of the boot from bottom to the top, the bearing will pop out. If it's not there, maybe it did fall, remove the spring clip at the bottom of the boot, pull the boot up, and look for the bearing

Oh no! Mine doesn't look anything like that and I've poked my little finger down through and can feel the bearing loose down below. So mine has done the opposite and fallen out the bottom
How the hell am I going to squeeze that back up through?!?!

Just remove the large spring clip (or just pull the boot upwards) at the bottom of the boot, pull the boot up, and look for the bearing

Oh it was as easy as anything. As above, the spring came off and I pulled it back. There it was and it all went together just like that. Earlier when I drove to Taunton and back it sounded like the turbo was inside the cabin!
