Lacquer peeling after damage
I have a 17 reg V40 and recently scuffed my bumper on a kerb (passenger front). I have a cosmetic damage insurance policy so I arranged for a repair though that. The technician has been this morning but noticed that the lacquer is peeling around the scuff mark which he was adamant was not normal.
I've had a bumper repair done in the past when someone scraped the driver side of the bumper whilst I was parked - I have checked the invoice and with the repairer who confirmed that they only repaired the bumper (not replaced) and that the work was restricted to the damaged side of the bumper only (so the opposite side of the car to the peeling). I was planning on dropping by the dealer since the car is still under warranty, but since I'm pretty clueless regarding car repairs I just wanted to check with some folks that are more knowledgeable in this field whether they have any advice. Edit - forgot to mention that the peeling is visible above the edge on the bumper and also to the far right of the scrape near the wheel. Last edited by tom287; Mar 19th, 2020 at 13:20. |

Normally peeling lacquer is the effect from poor prep and or not enough put on, this normally occurs when damage has been repaired.
This will give you food for thought though, damage could have been done to the vehicle pre PDI and repaired then or could have been done at any time when at the dealer, if they can get someone like chips away in on time without letting you know then thats what they will do, its far cheaper than you demanding a full bumper respray or demand another car. Thing is though, if i remember right, i am sure that pre PDI, if its repaired, its no longer classed as new, another reason to go behind the customers back. They could also argue that it has been repaired and therefore not covered by warranty. Another thing, depending on the person that repaired the previous damage on the other side, its not totally inconceivable that the lacquer be sprayed over most of the bumper, unlikely but not impossible.

That is known as intercoat adhesion failure and as has been said is down to poor prep, cleaning or incorrect mixing/wrong type of paint. I've seen a fair few cases a few years/months after "smart repairs".
As said above - the number of cars that have paintwork before the first owners see them is probably more than you think. I would say 99.9% that is not the original factory paint.
