Default V40 T4 Steering Does Not Return to Centre

Hello All,

I just bought a 2000 V40 T4 in somewhat rough condition. Most things on the car work adequately, but the steering does not return to centre after turning. In fact, even if you bring it to centre it tends to move back to the side where you just turned.

For example, if you turn right and let go of the wheel it will go mostly to centre but not all the way. If you correct it to centre and let go of the wheel it will move back to the right a bit. Eventually it moves back to centre. The same thing happens when turning left.

I've never encountered this on a car. I've had the geometry checked and it's said to be OK. Any thoughts?

I think that is memory steer, google it! Bearings at the top of the strut are to blame if my memory serves...hth

Thanks fungus! (never thought I'd type that anywhere). It seems to be exactly the symptoms I'm having. This article suggests that the bearing plate needs to be replaced. I'm not sure what that involves on a V40. Anybody ever have this done or have an idea what's involved in such a repair?
