Free Volvo 240 dl - for a donation to charity
Hi,
The MOT and tax expire on my beloved 240 dl saloon at the end of Feb. After 25 years of driving it I am hardly using it now. I've just taken it to have its emissions checked and as I thought they are too high, I think the carb is over fuelling. Anyway rather than scrap it, would someone want it for a donation to charity, say £25? It's an '84 B reg manual 112K genuine miles. My dad bought it from the main dealer as an ex demo with 2k miles on it. I've obviously got loads of old bills and MOTs as well. I am located in Harrow Middx. Mobile 07801946620. |

Tuning the carb up to pass the emissions isnt too difficult....Is the rest of the car still in good nick? If so I would sort out the emissions and get it through another MOT.....its only 1 screw to adjust the amount of fuel the carb feeds!

It depends what you mean by good, it's tatty but sound as far as I know as I had it welded up last year. The trouble is I only did 300 miles since the last MOT so I don't really need the car. I did have a play with the nut under the carb but it didn't seem to make much difference. I can't seem to stop the idle being very low and nearly stalling. I don't want the expense of an MOT to find out it failed as I have no way of measuring the emissions. If there's someone out there who knows what he's doing then maybe they could make use of the car.

Well the idle is a screw on the inlet manifold, just next to the carb, so that should solve one problem.
Have a look at the spark plugs - that will confirm whether it is running too rich or not. Is the choke mechanism working as it should? Cable isnt snapped and the choke stuck on or anything like that? I dont think the noise of the engine would particularly change if you were messing with the mixture screw...just the smell from the exhaust I would have though, and the plugs over a long term basis. Thanks for the advice but I've already had someone who wants the car and I've lost the inclination to do any more... I'm just pleased it's not being scrapped.

Thats good news! I had visions of this thread ending with a post stating how much you got for it as scrap metal!
