Crank Pulley / Harmonic Balancer Rubber
Hi all. My v70 2009 2.0D 187K miles has a clattery/engine shake at idle and is developing a dull oscillating knock and vibration that matches the engine speed. Have only had the car a few months and gave it some much needed love. Did service, cam belt. water pump straight away swiftly followed by replacing the clutch that failed and DMF while I was at it. So the car owes me quite a bit already. Cleaned and checked the EGR and used an oil additive to free up the lifters.
Anyway, after all that I still had an annoying shaking vibration at idle and a resonance that felt like a slight misfire at speed, accompanied by an increasing dull knock. At this point I feared rod knock (!) but I’ve discovered some posts about the bottom crank pulley giving similar symptoms when the rubber bonding perishes. And I recall the accessory belt (alternator belt) had lost a rib and I had to replace the tensioner when I first got the car because it was flapping about. So i’m hoping the pulley is shot because that’s way preferable to rod knock. I’ve had a look and taken a photo. Does this look normal? I can’t see any rubber bonding. Has it fallen off? Im hoping someone in here knows what it should look like and can comment. I’m struggling to attach an image so I’ll post this and try the image again in a reply. |

Pics attached - had to email them to my desktop and reduce their size before posting was allowed.

better Pics
So today I took the arch liner off and had a better look at the pulley, photos attached.
I'm not an experienced mechanic at all - I just do what I can to try to keep bills down out of necessity. To me it looks like the pulley is rotating off centre. the bolt has not loosened since a mobile mechanic replaced the tensioner because you can see the white paint markings line up. The rubber damper part looks okay to my untrained eye. To me it looks like the main part of the pulley is rotating off centre around the central "disc" which is a big thick "washer" type of part around the retaining bolt, with a gap visible on the right between the "washer" and the pulley, as seen in the photo. Anyone know what they're looking at and able to comment? Last edited by WaxOn; Sep 21st, 2021 at 12:57. |

Hello m8 just looking at the video..it sure doesn't look right to me
Is this a replacement wheel..? to me the nut in the center is not sitting right & doesn't look OEM.. I done mine on an s70 few months back mine was in bits the rubber was chewed up.. but looks way different to yours.. its got the center nut & four outer nuts around the wheel also..I would go to the breakers yard & look for same make model & source parts there..I wouldn't drive it until then cheers Vol.

Hey Vol thanks for the reply. I’m typing with oily hands.
I think it’s mostly an optical illusion. The outer circumference of the pulley rotates true and if I hold up a screwdriver tip for reference I can see that the bolt does not wobble either. I think the washer is not mounted centrally. Not sure if this is a problem or if it accounts for the vibration. I’m taking the accessory belt off next to see if the engine runs smooth (briefly) with it off. |

Much much better with the alternator/accessory belt disconnected.
Suspects are the alternator with play and a slight squeak and the air compressor and/or ac pulley which binds slightly. The ac pulley is suspiciously new and suspiciously cheap looking. So the saga continues. I just hope I have found THE problem not just A problem! |
