The original colour is not black, mid grey is closer to what it should be.

Make sure all the old products are removed before adding any other products. Although the bumpers are plastic they are tough and paint thinners works well at cleaning them in preparation for re-coating. 15 months ago I applied GTechniq C4 on mine after cleaning with paint thinners and they still look good

Don't use textured paint, it's horrible stuff and will look a mess

This is a texture finished bumper done by a "professional coach builder/painter"

Thanks guys for the input.

I had tried the G4 stuff previously and it was utter pants. I thought at that point that the previous owner had tried something and whatever they tried was still in the plastic somehow but who knows.

I’ll have a look at the Wurth stuff. Just worried any more wonder treatments will end with the same result. So annoying because for a few days it looked really good. Not quite as good as yours Mr 4x4 of course, but in relative terms, really good.

For what its worth, I really rate the Wurth Plastic Dye.

Don't put it on too thickly or else you'll get runs or obviously thick coverage which spoils the result. Colour wise, it lasted over a year on my old Landrover (I sold it then, so don't know how much longer it lasted).

I'll be doing my plastics with it next year after I've had a few paintwork blemishes sorted out, and the front bumper repaired & repainted - I have the usual 850R bumper cracks

Default MOT Failure

My 855 failed its MOT last week. The main issues were the bushes on the rear suspension trailing arms which had fractured. Relatively easy job to replace but getting hold of the items was a faff. The main stealer had one for the left hand side 9181013 but the right hand side 9181027 has been discontinued. I managed to source another one off eBay.

The steering rack ends inner and outer need replacing too. Part 31476353

I have a question regarding the exhaust. Mine has a hole in it at the rear where the tailpipe joins the main exhaust. The rest of the tail pipe all the way to the back box looks good, so I don't really want to replace the whole things, just the last 50 cms or so. I have attached photos of the fractured bush and the hole in the exhaust. Any ideas about the exhaust to get it through the MOT before I take it down to my Brother in Law who is a fabricator? What are the standard 850 T5 exhausts made of? Are they mild steel or stainless as my brother in law thinks stainless is a waste of money.

Cheers

If it's just a case of lashing it up before getting it to a workshop for a proper job, then an old beer can, held on with 2 or 3 large jubilee clips and sealed with some exhaust paste will do the job. The MoT man can't fail it if it isn't leaking, no matter how rough the repair looks, but I wouldn't leave it like this for long, it definitely needs proper replacement/repair.

These exhausts are stainless. It's low-grade stainless, so does rust eventually, but VERY slowly compared to mild steel. Why does he think stainless is a waste of money? That exhaust on your car would no doubt be the original item, if it were mild steel it would have had to be replaced several times by now. My car is the same, I've done a minor repair on it a while back, apart from that it's all original, and it's 24 years old. That would represent 4 or 5 mild steel replacement systems in that time, and it's got a lot of life left in it yet. I'd say that makes it excellent value! I generally find that the only bits that require attention now are the clamps which corrode quite badly - I think it's no coincidence that they are the only mild steel parts in the system.

HTH Cheers

I replaced the exhausts on my old 850 and my current V70. Both times the exhausts were 18-20 yrs old and I’d guess original.
A quote from FRF was around 600 quid.
I got my replacements from PFV, they are Jetex Stainless Chromium Steel (whatever that is).
At £350 for cat back and the fact they have an ‘extra join’ in them to get them easily over the rear axle, without the requirement for a lift made the choices ‘no brainers’ for me.

Exhaust box is stainless steel but the pipework is mild steel

MoT test on the C70 today....

Passed with one 'advisory': slight play in front suspension lower ball joint.
