Default V70 AWD Gearbox Issues

Hi

My 1997 AWD AUTO has suddenly lost its gears after a number of longer journeys in the summer but with not signs of a problem on the way until it happened. I was first thinking it could be ECU or other control issues but when I looked at the oil it was quite black, suggesting a burn out clutch I imagine.

I did flush the oil completely and refill just for the sake of it but unfortunately the issue appears to be just be getting worst. The car puts the arrow into flash mode and I also get a system light on, green and orange triangle on the lower right of dash. If I clear the codes, it works for a few yards and then it all fails again. When working it appears to go through most gears reasonably although 3rd is a very slow change. The error code suggests issues with either 3rd or sometimes 4th gear ratios.

Before I pull it all apart, I was wondering if anyone could suggest any other tests I should do to make 100% certain its not a stupid electronic fault causing issues. I actually feel the oil colour shows the way but I have not yet played much with this type of transmission.

The car has done just under 110000, 17000 with me since I bought it nearly two years ago. Its a great car so this is quite frustrating.

Any pointers would be appreciated, along with any information about good auto gearbox internal parts suppilers and images of the internals of the gearbox for when I strip it down.

Thanks

Hi markpin,

No particular experience of stripping a gearbox, but in case it helps, what codes are thrown?

(If you have a code reader that can read them).

Steve

The first code related to 'in-correct ratio on 3rd gear' and the second code was similar but about 4th gear.

I haven't bothered to clear or check the codes since I managed to nurse it home a week ago. I will look further at some point but as at certain points on the way home it lost drive completely, I am not holding out much hope.

Hi Markpin,

I googled for

volvo 1998 v70 awd "gear 3 incorrect ratio"

and found some relevant posts - but it's not looking good.

Hope that helps,
Steve

Yes, I am not expecting to find a silly error with it, the total drive failure and black oil points to internal clutches wearing out I think.

I have now bought another car to scrap with good working gearbox so its only total lack of time thats now holding me back!
