Default Removal of roof rails for re-spray

Having re-sprayed all black external trim (looks lovely and new again now) my roof rails look kind of grey and dated

I started taking them off to spray them (thought probably easier than masking up half the car) then I realised that the little bolts screw into a metal plate within the roof somewhere and it sounds like that plate is rattling around inside and may slide out of position with bolts removed

rather than having the arse ache of having to go fishing for it or removing inner trim I just screwed it back tight and left it for now

do these little metal plates cause issues when removing / refitting or am i worrying unduly, anyone done this before?

Hi.
Yes , they can move out of position and yes they can be a real pain to re-align.
Best course of action is to use long studding ( one in each plate ). Can`t remember the thread size but you`ll know that having removed some. Also make sure they are water tight when refitting . Original fit uses a fibre type washer which rot over time so it`s a good idea to use a non-setting mastic as a replacement.

ah good shout will definitely use that method, cheers. glad I stopped then in that case

will do in next few weeks then and I still have a half used tube of silicone sealer left from when I was going over the joins on my headlights. don't ever intend taking them off again that'll be it for the life of the car now I reckon

much appreciated
