Default S90 as a relaxed motorway cruiser

Looking for a 2nd hand S90 (2016-2018) with either D4 or D5 AWD. I know D5 is more fun, D4 has better MPG, but...

Which one is smoother and more quiet on a typical 70mph cruise?

Also, any differences between Inscription and R-Design in terms of driving/handling? I think the differences are purely in aesthetics; I'd expect the engine/suspensions/steering tunings to be the same, right?

Thanks

Hi, I have a 2017 S90 R-D4sign and love it. Love the sportier look.

It has the same engine, but different tyres, front lower grill and slightly lowered suspension.

As a result I am led to believe it has a slightly stiffer suspension.

My 2017 year has 18" Rims. No paddle shifters. I believe 2018 were 19"?

Each to their own on looks etc.

I love it, love the sportier seats etc.

Try to see one in person.... good luck.

If you are after comfort, Inscription is the way to go. Inscription models are comfort bias whereas R-Design are sports bias.

Inscription has softer, more compliant suspension and more comfort oriented seats compared to the R-Design's stiffer sports suspension and sports seats which grip you better but are firmer.
If you can stretch to an Inscription Pro, you even get fantastic massage seats which really take the stress out of long trips and very plush air suspension which rides even better.

As for engines, the D4 and D5 have the same outputs in both models so its down to if you want better performance (D5) or better economy (D4).

As sk546 says, for comfort go down the Inscription route. The R Design as a more sport set up, sits a little lower with a stiffer suspension set up. I have a 68 R Design V90 D5 awd and a mate of mine runs a 68 Inscription V90 D4. definitely two different beasts. Both good motorway mile munchers, it's when you get on the twisty roads and start to play with the flappy paddles the R Design leaves the Inscription in its wake, and the D5 has a bit more grunt over the D4. Try and have a drive in both to make your mind up.

Sorry, what I meant but obviously was taken the wrong way was the power output of the D4 & D5 engines do not change depending on the model spec you choose, i.e. a D4 Inscription and D4 R-Design have the same power output and likewise, a D5 Inscription and D5 R-Design have the same power output.
Not that the D4 and D5 have the same power output as that is far from the case.
Thanks for pointing out that what I had written could be taken a different way than it was meant.

D4 and D5 R-Design are the same as the D4 and D5 Inscription etc

The only thing I would say to this is, be careful with Inscription Pro as they tend to come with much bigger wheels (usually 20s)......the ideal combination would be 18s or 19s and Inscription Pro.

I had my dealer swap the 20s on my R-Design Plus for the standard R-Design 18s so that the ride comfort was way better.

Of course, it might make less of a difference on an S90 compared to a V60 though.

I can't compare it to the momentum or inscription as I haven't driven either, but I've recently bought an S90 RDesign D4, I've been up and down the motorways and some major A roads and all I can say is it is the most comfortable and easy to drive car I've owned.
