Weber carb for 700
Hi. Just added an '89 740 estate to the ridiculous collection of Volvos. Can anyone sell me a manual choke Weber for this B230K car?

An '89 with a carb?!
Or are you intending a convert from fuel injection to carb? The Weber kit is designed to replace the Pierburg. Prufrock. |

They are still available new... if you have deep pockets (full of money). For the later cars: http://www.webcon.co.uk/shop/shopexd.asp?id=841 |

Injection & Carburettors.
Quote:
According to my 1988 brochure, all models and derivatives (2.0 and 2.3 engines) had fuel injection. Microprocessor controlled on 2.0GL (B200E) & 2.3GLE (B230E) and Motronic on the 740T (B230ET). Regards, Prufrock. |

They definitely ran to the end of the decade. I once had a 1988 740 with the B230K (or strictly called the B230KH engine). They ran the Pierburg 2B7 carburettor, which was a slightly modified 2B5 as used on the 1986 and earlier models. I'm not sure why your brochure doesn't include it? From MY1987 onwards they lost the 'GL' and 'GLE' and were simply badged as a '740'. They didn't even chrome the 740 badge on the base model!

Conundrum.
This is a conundrum OBV.
The 2.0(B200E)was introduced to the UK market, designed to give a boost to Volvos marketing effort in the fleet sector, it was launched initially as a GL(the B200E seems not to appear before the"E"prefix - from August 1987). Let's go back: from 1988MY(from Q4 1987)the range looked like this, the GL was the B200E, and the GLE was the B230E. Later in the B200Es life it was available in both GL and SE - the SE more specifically targetting the fleet market"user chooser"(black finished exterior trim, standard sunroof, 15"wheels). It is at this time the carb car disappears -according to my information(emissions issues were beginning to play a bigger role and as far as I can see carb equipped cars generally are disappearing). The 740SE was introduced sometime after August 1988, it seems not to appear before the"F"plate-1989MY? Early in the 740s life, before the 745 was introduced, the carb cars were the GL and GLE, the only injected car was the GLT(early GLTs did not feature the later car's 16v engine), this is still the case in the 1986 brochure. The"base"model you mention does not appear in any of my Volvo literature or in any other contemporary material I have(I am missing the 1987 brochure though). Anoraky but interesting OBV, Prufrock. Yes. Very original low miles car unmolested. Wind up windows and cloth seats. Card is auto-choke Pierburg - pipes and vcuum hoses by the dozen.

It has got a carburettor!
Car is '89 on a G plate. Original and unmodified. Pierburg auto-choke, Engine bay looks like an Italian spaghetti factory.
The reason for wanting a Weber was the rough tickover and faltering at low rpm. There do, however, appear to be some problems with the plug leads and after a quick go at repairing the existing ones it ran better. Trying a new set next. Car goes like rocket when the second choke opens. Will still pursue the Weber route as it would give me a manual choke and less pipework, although it will take some figuring out what to with all the stuff that I'll have to disconnect. Thanks for all the ideas and advice - Mark

Conundrum Solved.
May have solved the apparent conundrum of the carb equipped cars with just"740"badging as OldBlue's photo shows.
Volvo, late in 1987 ("E"plate) launched a Special Edition 740, not to be confused with the SE (which was later). The 745 was badged"740"only and whilst based on the GL, was built to a lower price point hence the carburettor (114bhp), and manual front windows. In order to keep prices down the estate was only available in four paint colours: red, deep red, white and mid blue, all solid colours. This clearly was a test product for the fleet segment, this Special Edition would finally become the SE, in late 1988 - with a slightly different specification and engine (2.0 injection) and a higher specification than the GL. Have yet to see it in a brochure though, or price list. Prufrock. P.S below is the industry publication I referred to. |

Job Done!
Got a DMTL via ebay as a Ford Sierra conversion kit, almost new condition. Made a conversion plate from 10mm thick aluminium plate - much drilling, filing and tapping. Throttle link arm transfers from Solex with some bending and fettling. Choke cable in blank switch panel with aluminium bracket behind for reinforcement. Went for the cable-tie solution for the air filter.
Have not tried re-jetting it yet and in any case it goes like a rocket. Brilliant from cold and extremely smooth. Phenomenal torque. Happy to advise if anyone wants to do the same. Total cost about £140 plus about 5 hours (I'm not fast) and an injured finger from misuse of pillar drill. Needed a hole saw, an M8 tap and ground off an old 12mm drill bit to use as an end mill for recessed holes.
