So, my car was collected yesterday morning, Thursday for:
Service - tick
MOT - tick and

Sensus software update...
Try 1 - fail
Try 2 - fail - most functions lost including engine!
Try 3 - fail but 'only' no SatNav, infotainment, parking sensors etc
Try 4 - currently being remotely accessed from Sweden
To be fair they're making all the right noises so far, including the offer of a loan car while they sort it out.

I can't understand why they have not blocked this troublesome software until it is proved to be OK .. They are just making work for themselves for a minor update , the roads will not change in the next 6 months ... The back up system will tell you what you want to know , The MAP , which we motorists have been using for finding our way around the roads for over 100 years .

Yes, there is always a certain beauty in reading a paper map, whether it is large scale OS walking maps or a good road atlas.

I thought they had blocked it for a good long while. And now it is available again and people again have problems.

I can't help but wonder whether the problem isn't really the software upgrade itself, but the system that they are using to try and install the thing - possibly related to the overall size of the thing. If the dealer has an older/slower laptop, they might just get part of it updated, which would result in bricking the unit on the car. Or perhaps if the dealer has a slower internet connection, and their system is trying to download/upgrade simultaneously, then they might exhaust the data on-hand. Don't know - just guessing.

Just had the dealer on the phone. This is the first time they've had a problem with an upgrade. Sweden have not been able to fix it so they are shipping a new unit out - FoC. Should be here tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

You are lucky you did not attempt this upgrade yourself. The new unit will not be cheap. Interested to know how much (parts and labour), if the dealer is prepared to tell you.

No! New unit arrived from Sweden and installed but a) it was in Swedish so they had to change the language settings (not easy if you don't speak Swedish!) and b) it had the original map and software so needed updating. Apparently there is still a glitch in the software affecting some MY12 cars so they asked if I wanted them to go ahead or wait until the software is sorted.

They'd had the car for six days so I opted to have it back and they'll let me know when it's safe to go ahead. So I have a new SatNav but with the original 2011 map.

Full marks to the dealers (Clive Brook, Bradford) who gave me a loan car, fully fueled for the duration and kept me informed all along the way - and all for no reward.

Zero marks for Volvo, Sweden who, in the circumstances and in the interests of customer service, really ought to have ensured the unit they sent was updated to the latest version so it could be just put in without hassle.
