Well, I have had a T5 (from new) for just over a year. It also received the Polestar upgrade. It is a great drive even for my limited usage (5,000 miles last 12 months). A recent 200 mile journey including the usual holdups on the M 25 resulted in fuel consumption of 39 mpg. Only complaint is too much axle steer at low revs and full throttle, so some care is required under these conditions. Perhaps the V40 with AWD would not suffer from this. Anyone know?

Our V40 D2 CC auto does 56 mpg in my wife's hands and 68 mpg in mine. Plenty enough performance and will hit 90 mph overtaking while you look away from the speedo before you realise you are going too fast.

I have a my16 ( 1.5 ltr ) R Design V40 T3 Geartronic. Nav. Bright silver, with winter pack, comfort pack, heated screen and a few other bits and pieces.
First petrol car I've had for a few years and it's a great car. Performance is great and no noticeable lag. Mid range punch is very good. Owned from new for 6 months now done 3k miles. Economy is pretty good for a car that wants to be driven harder than I do, with 35-40 around town and over 50 mpg on the motorway. Only criticism is road noise on some surfaces. Undoubtedly due to poor or little insulation around boot area. Spar wheel boot floor has no adding at all! I intend to deal with that at some point. I thoroughly recommend this car and have no regrets. |

I need an automatic now and have recently changed from a V40 D2 manual to a 2016 V40 T2 geartronic with the new 1.5L engine, which I understand is a downsized version of the 2.0L used in the manual cars.
This is my first petrol car since an S40 2.4i which I owned some years ago and it is good to be driving a petrol again. Performance is decent enough for me and fuel economy is around 40 mpg so far. The car is an ES and has a few options including cruise control, parking sensors, comfort pack, space saver spare wheel and two level load floor. Really liking the car. |

1.5 litre - Ford or Volvo petrol engines?
Thinking about a new V40 as a second car alongside our XC60 VEA D4. Are the 1.5 litre petrol engines designed and built by Volvo or are they Ecoboost hangovers from the Ford Focus roots of this car?

The old 1.6L petrol used in the V40 was I believe based on the Ford Ecoboost engine but from what I have read all engines from 2016 model year on are Volvo VEA. |

That car had the earlier 16v diesel and was the better of the two V50s I've had. It averaged 65mpg over its life never failed me and was usual Volvo comfort build quality. The V40 is purely a luxury as I now have a top of the range Mondeo diesel as co car (pretty good by the way). I expect to do no more than 6-7k miles a year so with this mileage petrol is the way foreward. The car is cheaper to insure and service much more fun to drive. The D2 has a very low power band compared to the petrol, so whilst economy will be better, it would not be that much better in terms of ownership costs. Incidently, there is also the chance of regeneration issues if not driven and used properly. None of that with a petrol. |

I've found myself asking the same question as the thread-renewer ... looking at the price/specification list it appears Volvo fancies the T2 will return 45mpg and D2 55mpg.
But they also specify 98ROM/Super unleaded for the best performance/economy in petrol cars (which can be run on 95RON also) and I'd bet folk aren't doing that. Over an 8 year/100,000 life (at today's prices) that could have the D2 costing £2,750 less than the equivalent T2 ... and Volvo's service price estimator shows the standard service costs of the 2017MY T2 versus D2 are just about the same. However, that ignores the implicit risk of DPF/EGR failures and the risk to the DMF of diesel drivers performing high-load/strain (1,500-1,800rpm) gear changes. If each of those components fails on the 8 year span the owner experience would be very different. |
