So, here it is.
The difference between this and the last time I came on here is that I now own it. It looks pretty solid. The spare wheel wells are sound and I cant see any filler in the sills or anything. The paint work does let it down but its kind of presentable from a few feet away, and it does drive very well. Wouldnt surprise me if it was the one Triple S saw at Stratford, do you remember it? |

Well done, I like that.
Depending what you want to do with it, I think there’s a fair amount of bodywork to tidy up if you want to use it regularly and not have it deteriorate too much. There’s a lot of blistering on the sills, the spot on the front screen surround looks like it might leak, and the bottom of the rear wings and the spare wheel well looks a bit crispy. It’s not mint (panel fit on the drivers door, rear o/s door and the o/s of the boot lid looks a bit random, and I’d put fresh tyres on it and give it a thorough service before I used it much, but I’d certainly roll that. Nice interior, give it a feed and I bet the seats would soak it up. Price wise, to me, I’d see it at under £2k given the lack of use over the past ten years. Looks to have had a new mileometer looking at the MoT history. |

Avcent - no, its not the one I remember in Stratford as that wasn't a late-bumper injection car(and was grey!).
Congrats on saving the car - doesn't look too bad but there are lots of blotches or unsanded filler in strategic places, so a bit of research needed to confirm nothing is hidden. Speaking from experience my greatest fear, given your pics, is the area below the windscreen. I had similar on a former show car I bought, so had a dig.... ended up with a hole right through some 8" long by 2" wide. Cure - windscreen out and a lot of fabrication/welding. This is a serious weak area on these cars due bi-metallic corrosion between the steel body and the windscreen fixing clips. Don't be too disheartened with fears expressed by others on here - its a 45-year old car, show me a similar age Escort like I had, which simply fell apart. Treat it as a rolling resto but enjoy it: I did about 100 miles in my injection car yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. I can relate lots of other problems encountered on my cars, but that's beyond the theme of this thread. P |

I’m curious about your description of the car on the eBay ad where you say you’re not aware of any rot.

Volvo 164
Avcentraltial - by chance had this morning to cast my eyes over a 1-family ownership from new maroon 1970/1 164. Her late father's car, daughter is frankly confusing: with alternating sentences of "I want it to go into the hands of an enthusiast who will look after it, as it will rust away here" to "its so shiny it must be worth thousands, so I won't let it go for any less that £9k".
I went in my 164E so we took pictures of both side-by-side, but despite my advising a classic-car valuations guide reckoning being worth about £4k, she wasn't having any of it! I gave her a couple of classic car-selling site details, and wished her luck...., took several photos, and commented on the rust on top of each front wing (the rears have already been repaired - so much for always garaged). It has 79k miles, has an immaculate interior but it has the perhaps undesirable 3-speed column-change auto 'box. It will also be re-registered soon as she wants to retain father's registration. I see two 164s up for over £10k each are still advertised after months of trying....... Both are good (I've been all over both) but there are so few serious enthusiasts wanting to spend that sort of money on a frankly un-fashionable car out there. By looking at ebay I see yours has good interest, which works when being sensible re valuations. P |
