Default Sensus Sat Nav Modification

My 2012 XC60 has the Sensus system, where the maps were updated by putting CDs into the CD player.

From the Volvo Website:- These discs are no longer avaiable, and the car will need a modification which takes about 40 minutes and allows the CD to be updated using a USB port. The maps are freely available from our websidte.

So I asked the Volco agent to do the mod, but he has advised against it, as the mod is known to sometimes ruin the whole in car system, Sat nav, radio, cd player, etc, and can cost up to £2K to put right.

I emailed Volvo and they say that they have not asked customers to pay in the past, but when the dealer asks them , they say they would only pay 15%, leaving me liable for £1.7K

Has anyone had experience of this? I am appalled by Volvo's attitude.

About a year ago volvo were paying the full price if the screen failed whilst they were doing the update . sometimes volvo could recover the system remotely , You need to clarify whether volvo have stopped this or whether the dealer is trying to brush you off . Get a couple of opinions from other dealer service departments ...

I have been e-mailing their customer "Support" people who are less than helpful.
They now say that they would pay 25%, and that is their final offer.

I think I will write to their new MD, and if that fails, every newspaper I can contact.

I had that update done summer 2016 and all went well. It never occurred to me in 2016 that a software update, done by a Volvo dealer to install Volvo issued software, would be anything other than 100% covered by Volvo if problems occurred! Was I being naïve??

I wonder what the normal industry wide policy for problems arising after manufacturer software updates is? I mean Volvo even advertise their dealer servicing includes updates as a valued-added plus point!

Well, here is the latest update.

After the offer of 25%, which I took as an insult. I found the e-mail address of the MD. I wrote to him explaining my point of view and copying all of the previous correspondence. I will never know if this did any good, but within an hour, the gentleman at "Customer Support" who had e-mailed the "25% last offer", phoned me to say they they had had a "Re-think" and would cover the full 100% of any subsequent issues. He backed this up by e-mail to both the dealer and me.

So we are booked in for the update tomorrow. Wish me luck.

I have downloaded the updated maps, ready to go.

BC

P.S. Andy, how long did it take to actually install the updated maps. They tell me it can take up to 2 hours, so I guess I will need to go on a couple of long drives, as the car has to be running while the updates take place.

It will take about 1.5 hours for the 18 Gb map files and you can stop and start, it carries on where it left off ....

Well, we are all done and new maps installed. (OK so far)

Loading the maps is a bit of a pain, as with the software that they now install, the maps will not load while the car is being driven.

So the car has to be left (in my case for 3 hours and 6 mins), stationary with the engine stopped. You have to leave the radio on, or it keep shutting down. However with the radio on the battery runs low, and it still shuts down.

I left a battery charger on connected as advised, ut it still took 3 goes to get it all done.

You know when it is done, as you get the rather grumpy message:-

Installation finished, remove the usb stick.

Now for the next issue.:-

Default XC60 folding seat issue.

I regularly want to carry long items that need the front passenger seat folded down. I checked the manual to make sure this was done the same as the V70, that I had last.

However on trying it tonight, I find the seat will not fold down to get the head rest under the glove box, as the head rest hits the top of the box, and will not let it go down any further.

Anyone else had this problem???

I remember the early days with BMWs where the garage made the customer sign a waiver, thus releasing the garage of obligation of any guarantee work if the software update killed any modules.

They did this because back then the software updates were really unreliable, and they had some real horror stories resulting in bricked modules. Once a control module was bricked, the only thing they could do was replace with new. At customer's cost.

That was back in around 2002...

Well done.
Yes, the data transfer rates are not that fast.

My MY2009 XC90 took 3 hours to transfer about 40 GB from 2 DVDs to the hard drive. All down to the very robust way it is done, with write-read-verify on each block of data.

I also connected a charger (only 5A, but it was enough) and turned off absolutely everything I could, turned instrument illuminatin to minimum, left car locked with key in ignition on POSI, covered the nav screen with a towel so it was dark, and left it sitting there in the garage.

Was done in one night
