Turbo cleaning aerosols
Anyone used one of these spray can turbo cleaners? Simply spray up the air intake?
With 182,000 miles on the clock and the car running well I just think this may be a bit of preventative maintenance? Can’t see there being any down side to,it even if I’m not entirely sure it will do much. |

Spraying anything into the air intake has to go through the engine to do anything to the exhaust side of the turbo, and this is where the heat and carbon collect. On a fixed vane turbo I can not see it doing much, on a variable vane turbo it may clean the pivots but will it cause problems by washing lubrication off.
I have seen variable vane turbos where the vanes have frozen, stripping, cleaning and lubricating was only a temporary fix and eventually a new turbo canister was fitted to the original housings which as far as I know fixed the problem.. If the car is running correctly I would leave it alone. I understand the preventitive maintenance thing but as far as the turbo is concerned regular engine oil changes should see it right. Cleaning the erg valve would have far more beneficial effect but I would remove it and the pipework from the car to do it rather than risk dislodged crud getting into the valves and their seats. It is not a pleasant job from what I have seen so am leaving it until realy nessesary, again if it's going OK leave it alone. Paul. |
