'98 V70R air con pipes frozen
Evening all,
Had my air con looked at, had a new drier fitted as old one was a rusted mess and garage vacuumed the system twice to ensure no water etc. Refilled with gas. Compressor fired into life and the vents begun to produce ice cold air, but within 30mins the heater fan struggled to push air to the vents even though I could hear the motor flat out. The compressor cycles as expected (presuming not too fast 1 min a cycle I think without going out and timing) Looking under the bonnet the air con pipes were covered in thick ice. I'm guessing the evaporator is freezing preventing air flow. If you turn off air con for 30mins, it clears and the fans working again. What do I need? I've researched and think potentially a new orifice tube (1998 v70R doesn't have a evap temp sensor) but what else? I really don't want a new evaporator as its a dash out job! Thoughts?.... |

I used to be in commercial A/C, a little different to automotive, but the principles are the same.
Freezing pipework is a classic sign of low gas. Maybe get your pressures checked. Perhaps you have a small leak.

Is the filter to the Evap clear? If blocked lack of airflow will turn it into an ice cube.
Is it the pipe leading to the Evap, but after the inlet valve/orifice? If so, short or valve/orifice fault. If else where in the system then you may have a blockage. Definitely get the pressures checked as recommended above. Source: work in commercial refrigeration. |

Orifice tube replaced in that service? Easy to do and often block up with all the junk from your old drier + chunky balls of refrigerant oil.
Might also be your evaporator is jammed up with junk thats fallen down the intake from the scuttle panel + mould & mildew + 20 years of dust = air does not flow through it well at all. Fan might not make any more noise but when you switch to AC on and the flap moves across the flow of air reduces, if that happens, evap time |
