Default Re-programming new transmitter?

Hi all,

I have just purchased a 2004 S40 and the previous owner lost one key. I need a spare, but local dealership wants $350+tax Canadian for it. I noticed I can pick up a used one from the US and then just purchase a new key from the dealer. Can you guys tell me how would I re-program the new transmitter to work with my car? Do I have to take this to the dealership as well? Is there a easy way to do this myself? What is the best way...should I just buy a new one from the dealership? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Gord.

Also...how can I find out if its compatible with my car. I saw the picture and it looks identical. Its from a 2005 S40 while mine is 2004 S40. Are they all the same? Do I have to match the specs with mine? Thanks.

Not done any yet but am guessing there same as s60/v70 etc, whitch means a used fob is useless without its code to program it into the car.

When new fobs are ordered they come with this code to program them in but after that the code is binned and not used again. Its a dealer only job to program fobs in aswell.

So does that mean I can buy a used one and take it to the dealer to re-program? Or are you saying once its been programmed once its useless after that? Thanks.

If the used ones got the code with it (which i doubt very much it will) yeah but if it hasn't its useless

Can the key part be cut at a locksmith or does it have to be from Volvo as well? I think the local dealership wants to charge like $75 canadian for the key only. Doesn't look like a normal key, so I have no idea if it can be done at a locksmith. Thanks.
