No start after replacing swirl flaps - help me fault trace

Just replaced lifters, swirl flaps and gaskets, belts and tensioners.

All back together now, car cranks but wont start. I’ve bled the high pressure pipes at the injectors.

Here’s a question though. When I took the leak off pipes off to check if there was excessive leak off on an injector, fuel was pumping through the leak off pipes when the ignition was turned on. Is this correct? Feels like there shouldn’t be fuel going that way? Is there a one way valve in the plastic connector?

Appreciate thoughts and pointers for more fault tracing.

I went through a non starting euro3 D5 a couple of weeks back and tested the return flow on the injectors. There was no diesel coming out of the lines and injectors when the low pressure pump ran while ignition on. I found out that the high pressure common rail system needs at least 200 Bars to start. You can check this with a OBD2 reader. It should actually spike to round 400/500 bars when starting.
If it does not, that's the reason it wont start. If everything is placed back as it came you might still have air in the system. Just prime the low pressure fuel pump a couple of times(ignition on and of again) after that keep cranking it with some intervals. It takes time to fully bleed the system.
Of course make sure the engine timing is right if you changed the timing belt.

If you want i can check a Euro 4 D5 for the leaking bleed off you described to make sure.

I went through everything again this morning, checking all connectors, took the crank pulley off and checked the timing. Put it all back, still no start. Then turned it over while spraying some easy start in, and she fired up and ran perfectly!

Driven around 30 miles and checked codes on Vida and all good.

No more tug boat sound either which was the ultimate aim.
