Timing belt failure
Hi
I have a '99 V40 with 74,000 on the clock. At 50,000, (May 03) I got it serviced (for the last time) by a local Volvo dealer. It cost me £500 but included a new timing belt (as specified). Last week, a few days after the 70,000 service (at a non-Volvo but generally reliable local garage) (actually I've got to 74,000) the belt failed, on the road. The Volvo dealer who serviced it in 03 says that parts are only guaranteed for a year and labour for 3 months. OUCH! A hefty bill awaits me, I can't help feeling this shouldn't happen, if the recommended replacement interval is 50,000. Does anyone have any similar experience, good advice, or happy endings? |

RE: Timing belt failure
What engine are we talking about here, am guessing either a diesel or GDi.
It depends on why the belts failed, there's usually a reason as to why they fail the most common been water pumps seizing up, but yeah the parts are only covered for a year i think.

RE: Timing belt failure
Its a 99 model so it will be old shape with 1.9D badge on (i think) on back, D4192T2 engine.
Most common cause of these engines breaking there cambelts is when they throw there auxially drive belts off and it gets pulled into the cambelt and causes it to miss a few teeth then usually snap. There was a couple of modification out for that engine that was ment to stop it doing that, they were a new tensioner and a freewheel pully on the alternator, it should of had them done under warrenty. Either way, unfortunatly i can see it been an expensive job to fix
