Default Clunck when clutch is released sharply or accelerator peddal is jabbed

I have 2003 petrol 1.8 V40.

I can hear a clunk when I either release the clutch pedal sharply or jab at the accelerator pedal.
I would add that whilst this is not my normal style of driving, it does happen when in a traffic que or overtaking.

Whilst I am not technically minded, I think it occurs when the enginge is under "Torque" .. The engine perhaps moves on its mountings and causes something to bang. It is a metal to metal sound.

Volvo garage have changed the whole clutch assembly thinking it was the "Clutch bearing thingamybob" but this has not solved the problem. They have also checked the mounts, exhaust and looked for any signs of wear.

Now they have given up!

Whilst it does not affect the performance of the car,it is anoying and I am concerned as it may be causing future damage!

PLEASE HELP!:-(

I think I've seen other posts in the forum about this? I think it was one of the upper engine mounts .. something about a plastic spacer that was a loose fit within the mount.. this was allowing the engine to "rock" a little. I do know I've had the upper mounts changed on my 2002 V40SD (not due to a knock but mor of a rattle, that didn't cure the problem, it was found to be cheep fuel causing a severe diesel knock). Can you trust Volvo dealers to fix our motors?????!!!

Maybe some one could confirm this for me and the guy who has the problem?

certainly sounds like the clutch, but it could also be the engine mounts.

youve had a new cluthc fitted,

My engine mount "clacked" do do the upper offside mount (the only one you can see) and the white plastic spacer. The mount wasnt broken, it was just worn which created slack in the assembly. Volvo may not have picked up on this.

i'll try and find the thread....

here it is

Hi,
I have just replaced the upper offside engine mount on my S40. The old one looked ok but when off the car I found that the bolt hole in the centre of the rubber was off centre, I assume this was due to age and fatigue. This was allowing the metal casing of the mount to make contact with the metal support bracket around the mount, thus causing a clonk noise when the engine was revved under load. I also noticed that this contact had worn the paint off the back section of the bodywork mounting point, drivers side closest to the back of the engine bay.
Hope this info will help with your fault diagnosis!

Thanks I will pass this on to the Volvo engineers at my local garage.
Hopefully it will give them something else to look at.

Thanks again.
