Default Oil grade/spec

Hi chaps,

My car (S80 2.4 D P3) is due a service soon, but I've decided that I'll be doing it myself this time (I have VIDA also). I can do the service much cheaper than the garage quoted me, plus the car is a 2007 plate. I figured that I'm not really going to gain much clinging onto/paying for garage servicing to keep the service history record up to scratch come resale time on a car that's approaching 14 years old. I'll keep the receipts of the DIY work completed to show any prospective future purchaser though, but won't be paying garage prices/labour rates for a few filters that I can do myself in my own time.

I'm planning on doing a full service, so all the filters (Mann) & the oil of course! That leads me to my next question...

I know the recommended oil is Castrol 0W30 A5/B5 spec to be used in my car, but its pricey & I'm looking to keep the spend down as much as I can. I did come across the one linked below & its much cheaper than the Castrol when applying the discount, but its a decent brand all the same. However, its 5W30, but it meets A5/B5 spec according to the description.

I don't live in Alaska, so is using the 5W30 grade really going to make much of a difference? £50 for 6L of Shell 5W30 (inc discount), £81 for 6L of Castrol 0W30 (inc discount).

https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/shell...5ltr-521772611

**The link above only shows a 5L container. I know I'll need another 1L for a top-up. Although the car takes 5.7 litres - I'll have a drop left. **

The prices I've mentioned above earlier in the post are for a 5L container, plus a 1L container. So Shell is £31 cheaper than Castrol.

I've been using this in my D5's, T5's and 2.0D's for the past 10 years spanning model years 2000 to 2017. It also goes in my Ford Ranger, Lawnmowers, compressor, strimmer and compact tractor. I'm no oil expert but I believe it meets the spec, is good value and easy to get hold of :

My personal opinion is in the UK there will be no impact from moving to a 5w-30 from 0w-30. Until the 18k service intervals Volvo did spec 5w-30 for the UK in that the manuals used to include a chart with minimum and maximum temperatures and for -20 to +30 centigrade 5w30 was specified.

If you download the manual for the 2004 XC90 from Volvo's website (takes 10 seconds) you will see what I mean. Of course engines on later cars with DPF's etc. have more specific requirements but again I'm sure it will be fine.

That 5 litre Shell oil is £22.10 at carparts4less including delivery.
Use code bye20.
The comma oil is also very good and have use it many times in my previous Jaguar as well as my S40.

I have it in the XC70 at the moment. All fine - it's a huge Russian operator.

Thanks for the input all.

I decided to take a trip to Halford's yesterday afternoon to see if there were any discounts off oil. As its only down the road, I figured that I'd just pick some up if there was anything that caught my eye. Much to my surprise, there was an offer on Mobil 1 Super 3000 oil (5W30 & meets A5/B5 spec). A 5L drum & a 1L drum for a top-up was £38!

Castrol was £93 for 6L, but that was 0W/30 (no discounts off Castrol). I also noticed that Castrol was only sold in 4L drums & 1L ones. So that means you have to buy one 4L drum & two 1L ones. Whereas, the Mobil is sold in 5L drums & 1L ones.

Safe to say, the Mobil come with me.
