No, since your car is a 2012, just like mine, it doesn't have the Real Time Traffic Info option (RTTI). It has TMC (Traffic Message Channel).

TMC is broadcasted via the FM RDS radio service. RTTI is transmitted over the internet, and thus requires a car with Sensus Connect, not just Sensus. You need a car with the earth globe symbol at the upper right of the key cluster in the center console.

TMC is based on information provided by some kind of traffic information service. In Sweden, it's the National Road Administration Authority who runs that service. The information provided is based on information from entrepreneurs about road work, emergency services attending to accidents and other similar sources.

RTTI is based on information from some web service (Volvo doesn't specify which), which provides traffic related information. Such information is usually collected automatically, by cars reporting back their progress. Your car does that, if you have RTTI enabled when driving. Then some, more or less, clever algorithm figures out that if a certain number of cars are slowing down to a crawl at about the same place and direction, there's probably some issue. This is listed on the web service, which your car accesses to retreive that information and display it.

As we also have a 2016 model, which I upgraded from just internet maps to Sensus navigation, I've had some hands on experience with RTTI. Nowadays, if you upgrade to Sensus Navigation, RTTI is included in the upgrade. It's overly sensitive here in Sweden, frequently giving alerts just because people slow down in roundabouts, for example. But since that's an algorithm thing outside your car, there's hope that it will improve, and now at least that car will be able to benefit from it.

As our 2016 has Volvo on Call, it also has it's own modem. I can put a SIM card in the card holder in the glove compartment, and then the car will access the internet regardless of who's driving, and if there is any phone sharing internet access or not.
Cars without Volvo on Call have to rely on a phone, sharing internet access via Bluetooth or WiFi.

In that case I can see why Volvo moved away from TMC. It isn't effective or reliable. It has been known on congested motorways to take you up a flyover exit slip road and then take back down to rejoin the motorway the other side of the flyover. That tends to **** off other road users as I don't know the sign language for " It wasn't me, it was my sat nav that tried to get the jump on you!"

Well, but that doesn't really have anything to do with TMC versus RTTI. These two channels are just different methods to provide your navigation device with traffic related information.
Then it's up to the navigation system to figure out if it should just update the ETA, or try to find an alternate route for you. In the latter case, then of course a strictly greedy algorithm may consider the ramps to move faster than the actual highway.
I remember from the time when I did software testing for Garmin, that they had to write a special condition in the routing algorithms, to prevent them from trying to optimise by doing what you describe. If the exit is in a curve on the highway, the route up the exit and down the entry may be shorter, even when there's no traffic information available.

My 2015 V70 has sensus, and I assume it has the update as it diverts me if the traffic is bad. It has been very good most of the time, but occasionally the jam has cleared by the time we get there, I've had no letter despite main dealer servicing so guess it's included.

The upgrade (or accessory, if you like) to real time updates via the internet has only been available for v/xc 60 and 70 since last summer. TMC, which provides traffic status via FM radio is a lot less accurate as coverage is patchy and not that up to date. So if you, or previous owner(?) have not bought the upgrade you will not have it.

Some dealers are pushing it with letters to customers because it is another way for them to reel you in to spend £50-80. The retail price of the software is less than £20 so they want to charge the rest in installation costs. Tip: if you want software upgrades of any type, eg RTTI or Towing software, try and get a price while the car is already booked in for something else, you are much more likely to get a 'good deal'.
