Default What are these fittings? (carbed 164)

I recently bought a 1970 164 and I'm working through some concerns I had. First up, mystery fittings on the valve cover and exhaust manifold:

The PO said that these should be connected together, but it seems weird that you'd connect the valve cover to the exhaust system.

Can anyone tell me what these are for? I haven't had a lot of luck in the Haynes manual, except that the piece on the exhaust manifold may be part of a now-removed air injection system.

Thanks!

That on the exhaust manifold looks like a breather nipple (strange - does it vent when the engine is running?), but as its dark here will look on my LPG-equipped 164 tomorrow, as I know that has several differences.

yes , when the engine is idling there is vacuum in the exhaust manifold . if it were on the inlet manifold the constant air bleed would affect the emission carbs . This is how all the 1970 UK 164's were .

HI, I have had many 164s, and all having different variations. This should be connected, as it is part of the crankcase breathing system. Some 164s have a box on the side of the block, just in front of the distributor, and I can see by you picture, yours hasn't. The reason for an entrance into the exhaust is, it then just goes out with exhaust gasses. The other one, which goes to the rear of air box is an inward air feed, thus allowing the engine to breathe. With yours being taped off, your engine will try to expel through other softer gaskets. The most common reason owners tape them up is that they can't find a suitable hose to connect the two. I hope this helps. Please feel to contact me

Thank you, I'll see if I can find a hose to connect them... it looks like they are different diameters, is that why owners have a hard time finding the hose?

deadbeef, this link should take you to the 164 catalog on GCP's website. If you're not already aware of this, it can be a very useful resource. Go to page 42 in the catalog. I think part #24 / #36 is the hose you need, which would be Volvo part # 460003. If so, you can get this from IPD (they currently show having only 1 in stock!), or check with Eric at Hi Performance who was helping you over on Turbobricks. He's also an invaluable resource!

Hopefully, the hose you need isn't #22 / #26, as I didn't find anyone, including GCP, as showing that hose (Volvo part # 430283) as still being available, not that I did any real "digging around" for it. Hopefully, you can ascertain from the picture in the catalog exactly which one you need, though the picture is a bit confusing due to hoses crossing.

Note that this 164 catalog is only available one other place - at a site called volvotips. They have it broken down by sections, so it can be much easier to find exactly what you're looking for quicker, but their version is all of scanned in copies, so pages are cut off and not as clear.

Good luck with the car!
