tail lights
Hello, to every one I'm trying to find the tail lights assembly of my 1973 volvo 164, end is really hard to find them, already have the covers. Or may be some of you guys knows how to fix it. I live in Los Angeles CA, and there is no more 164's around. Thank you.

If you are new to speaking with us, welcome to this somewhat exclusive band of Volvo owners. There are not many 164s around anywhere nowadays, although California is admittedly a lot bigger than the south of England!
I presume your rear light boxes are damaged: I looked on the 164 parts lists with suppliers I have dealt with (Brookhouse, Scandix and CVI) and it seems none are available new. However I guess there are parts dealers you could search for in the USA? I see there are/were several 164s in breakers your side of the pond - you are luckier than us in that respect. Can't your light boxes be mended with a little glue and patching? I have several sets here but all second-hand and possibly a little damaged but if/when the time comes (bad reversing.....) I can probably mend. However, if you buy used make sure the make matches your lenses as Cibie and Bosch differ slightly where the lens cover fits, and are not immediately interchangeable unless you attack things with a dremmel...... If you need from Europe you may have import taxes to consider too. Incidentally, your front bumper mounting seems further forward than on my '73 model 164E, by several inches. Is that normal for the USA market or has it been modified? Nice-looking car in my favourite colour..... Paul |

Thank you Paul, and yes here in California the bumpers needs to be like that in order to be legal, I was thinking to use fiber glass whit some kind of resin and then paint it. Thank you for your advice.

they should be the same as Volvo 142/144 1973-1974 and 242/244 1975-1978 im not sure but i think they used two different manufacturers during the 240 period (so if you have a HELLA it wont fit the other manufacturers) but if you get the whole assembly it will fit.
New HELLA lenses and lensgasket is availble from VP Autoparts: http://212.247.61.152/us/main.aspx?guest=yes Erik in Sweden |
