Transmission fluid
Hi
I own a 15 plate v40 d2 cross country auto - as I would like to keep it for many years and it is on 95k miles do you think a change of transmission fluid would be a good idea given the miles, its having a oil change/flush this week and I only use shell v power for diesel. I asked where I got it from and they kind of indicated if its not broke dont fix it saying that sometimes doing a change of transmission fluid can cause issues. Any thoughts on this please ? I have owned the car for just under a month. |

Don't believe the "sealed for life", or "you don't need to change the transmission fluid" blurb that you hear. All fluids need to be renewed at some point. Now, if it was a very high mileage car with no history of a transmission service, I'd probably advise against it. The reason being, new fluid can dislodge dirt and that can get trapped inside the internals of the transmission causing shifting issues. As your car doesn't have high mileage, I'd advise getting it done. 92k is nothing on a Volvo. Make sure you use the correct spec transmission fluid for the car. This is vitally important.

Thank you, I am doing as much as I can to keep the car in good condition. It has full service history and about 10 days ago I also did DPF clean so I start my volvo experience in a good place. I really love the car, drives lovely and really economical. I will look into the transmission service, seems a good idea for longevity.

What kind of mileage are you doing per year? These D2's definitely need motorway drives to keep the DPF happy (regular drives too at 50mph+ for at least 30 minutes). Well, any modern diesel does to be honest. Just make sure you don't do too much town driving because it can cause problems. Give it a good spin every month or so on the motorway and it should be fine.

2015 is a change year - do you have the 1.6 D2 with Powershift or 2.0 D2 with Geartronic?
Either way it's a very good idea at 95k to get the gearbox juice changed, but it's a difference process and fluid depending on the model fitted.

Hi, yes got my local garage to clean it - I do about 40 miles a day to work and back 5 days a week so it is used often. I tend to stick to a speed of between 55 and 60 to be honest as that seems to be a good speed for fuel conservation too. I love my volvo, proably the best car I have owned.

Thank you, yes that seems a plan. Am getting all these things done to help my car in the long run. I have the D2 1.6 auto powershift

If it was a Geartronic transmission, there's no filter that you can access without taking the whole transmission apart, so on one of those, you just change the fluid. Yours is different though.
