I've discovered it's good for keep fit today....
Had to chase the car down a hill to get the brake on. Luckily caught it. I've come out of a nasty combination of an automatic, and one where the parking (foot) brake was sticking so rarely used. |

I was taught when learning to drive many, many moons ago aged 17 to always leave a car parked in gear in case the handbrake failed. Still do it to this day, even on level ground, just a good habit to get in to

I don't have a huge issue with the current EPB - I've got used to it. I just think that it's silly to force people to "get used to" fundamental parts of their car. Why not swap the accelerator and brake? You'd get used to it...
However, readers of this thread will be glad to see that not only is the new XC90 better in its location and mechanics of the EPB, but there's also an auto mode, visible at the bottom left: |

Volvo have always recommended leaving the parking brake off when leaving the car unused for longer periods (as is often done in Sweden) to avoid the shoes/pads getting seized onto the drum/disc. So auto on would need to be an option. I never leave mine on in the garage.
I don't mind the handbrake switch position. I much prefer the 2015 XC60 handbrake to that of the 2003 XC90. Seems a lot easier to use to me.

What do Volvo say about taking a learner driver out in a 60 series ?
In most cars, the 'instructor' can access the handbrake should they need to bring the car to a swift halt. I guess from the location of the 60 series handbrake button/lever the offspring have all been taught in older cars with central levers. Does anyone still take their young ones out or is it all governed these days ?

I agree....
This is what I refer to as a first world problem. If this is what bugs you then pinch yourself ( or punch yourself in the head? ) and celebrate what a guilded life of luck and loveliness you have.

Nope that is autohold - literally you come to 0 mph and the car will hold with the handbrake on automatically then release when you move off via the throttle.
It is useful to stop creep when you do not want an auto box to, conversely if you only want to creep a few metres it is highly useful for that as well as you can turn it off and regain the creep of a normal autobox. As for whether it should release automatically I find the BM useful and annoying in the same breath...open the door or anything it will automatically put the handbrake on and go into park (which some are quoting on) - I get some find the benefit of this but I find it annoying if you are simply checking you are within the lines of a bay etc. I do not find the positioning in the BM difficult as it is conventional like many other EPBs, the S60 that I had for a few days still haunts me as the position is annoying like it or not and the fact the XC90 is now in the conventional position does say many things bout the positioning being wrong originally. |

my xc60 rdesign 2015 epb
Well after reading all your (arguments) quotes, i must be the only one who has a different issue.
The epb on mine auto release 75% of the time then the other 25% it will not release and i have to, wait for it, manually release the epb. Mine must be a friday afternoon car, haha. Styl3r |
