I've done some digging about and have found the fire safety approval standard that these products are meant to reach

http://locoseatsoz.com/FMVSS302.htm

It depends how you look at it but I'm not too impressed.

Each product is allowed to catch fire within a time frame of 15 seconds when exposed to a naked flame. The rate of burning is then measured. A rate of burning and travel of the flame must be limited to a distance of 105mm.

If the flame stops burning within 60 seconds and travels no further than 51mm it is considered to be OK.

#####

Essentially this standard is aimed at people smoking in cars so it is only concerned with the effects of naked flames. It ignores heat sources such as engines and exhausts and perhaps overheating wiring (!)

i'm not surprised you're unimpressed, your link + data is irrelevant. you need to search and link to EU and US Federal product testing especially int'l SAE standards. there's plenty of data out there c/o a good google search.

Well I got in touch with a manufacturer and they quoted that standard.

Default Sound proofing update

Apologies for the delay in posting the results of my sound proofing efforts. In truth I only got validation of the results yesterday when I took my wife out for a drive, the results of which I'll let you know at the end of the post.

so to recap

My wife was very unhappy sharing time with me in the P1800S as she thought, whilst very stylish, it was smelly and noisy. So I sought advice from forum members on sound proofing and just before winter competed the sound proofing but didn't get around to driving the car until last weekend.

Summary of the work done;

I blocked the gap with foam where the steering column enters the firewall, this made a huge difference to the smell preventing any engine fumes from entering the cabin. I'd highly recommend folk check this as it's a simple fix.

I double checked that there are were no other holes in the firewall (there were none).

I replaced the gear lever rubber gator which was split.

I replaced the missing gasket where the rear bumper support bracket enters the boot.

I did appropriate rust repairs and repainting to the floor pan.

The original soundproofing in the firewall was all but totally decomposed and effectively useless.

I fitted sound proofing in 4 areas;

Under the bonnet- Dynamat extreme plus Dynamat hood Liner
Firewall - Dynamat extreme plus Dodo Sound Stopper MLV
Boot - Dynamat extreme plus Dodo Super Liner
Floor pan - Silent Coat Black 3mm (equivalent to Dynamat but much lower cost for UK folk) with Dodo super liner 6mm

I chose not to sound proof the doors.

I did attempt to do some sound level measurements but this was largely unsuccessful at best it showed approx 10-15dB reduction in sound level.

The work was relatively straight forward and was completed with about 4 days work.

For those interested in sound deadening the website recommended by c1800 www.soundeadenershowdown.com is by far the best I've come across.

So the results....... I was convinced that things were quieter but my wife thought the change was dramatic, no smells anymore and much quieter, able to converse at normal voice level and no need to turn up the volume on the radio. So in all very successful.

For UK viewers I'd definitely recommend the Silent Coat over the Dynamat for cost and ease of application reasons.

The only remaining unwanted noise is from the diff whine but I suspect that will be more problematic to resolve. http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/images...ular_smile.gif
