Default Going from 215 to 225 on 18" wheels?

I've found a bit of past info on this but not much...so thought I'd ask...

I've got a V50 2.0D R-Design with 215/45/R18 tyres on at the moment, I have heard of people going to 225, what effect though does this have on the ride/handling? Are there any downsides to doing this?

Well, with 215/45R18 you need a speedo update to get the right speeds shown.
With 225/40R18 you don't need the update. The 225/40ies cost less per tire than 225/45s. With 225/45s you'll have a speedo which may even show less than driven...

-> diameter with 215/45 R18 incl. rim: 65,1 cm
-> diameter with 225/40 R18 incl. rim: 63,7 cm
-> diameter with 225/45 R18 incl. rim: 66 cm

-> circumference with 215/45 R18: 197,8 cm
-> circumference with 225/40 R18: 193,7 cm
-> circumference with 225/45 R18: 200,5 cm

If you need an update (Volvo says 18" with 215/45 R18 needs an update!), then you'll definately need an update and even then it might be a bit on the "sloppy" side...

With or without speedo update?

My 215/45 R18s (on my older rims) were without an update spot on with the speed. The 225/35 R19 (at the moment) are out by a couple of km/h.

When you went from 215 to 225 did you change tyre make?

I fiind the grip better and the ride much better on the 225's

Would this be the reason the ride felt a bit slopy.

I'm guessing you'll be sacrificing MPG with more rubber on the road
