Default Oil Additives

Hi all,

Quick query, is there a consensus on oil additives and D5 motors ?

Friction reducers ZX1 or the STP/Wynnes oil additives. or is good quality modern oil good enough ?

Apologies if its been asked before, not got to grip with the search function yet.

TBH have always been sceptical of oil additives. All of my previous cars have been high mileage diesels without issues running manufacturer spec'd oil grades and nothing else.

take care,
Paulo

Once a year I add Amtech Restore Oil. I first used it in an old Alfa Romeo Spider that had a significant vibration at idle, and low compression is a couple of cylinders. I had nothing tomlose using it, except the cost if it didn't help. After a few months, the idle was smoother and I decided to check compression again. I can't remember the exact figures, but I do know for sure the compression had increased to near as damn it suggested figures.

Ive used it min my XC90 now, it has 127k on. had the chuffing when warm through the air intake etc.

After approx 300 iles I can say the chuffing is reduced and Idle is much smoother. To the degree I do check the car is on sometimes.

It worked and continues to work for me. I like it. I will use it again and again.

Never used any engine oil additives , just a dose of redex before a long run ( been adding this to my cars since the 70's ) but in desperation last year I added Lucas autobox condition to the box , it cured the "flair " on third to fourth and made the other gears so much smoother , so I keep an open mind over additives from now on

I have used Archoil AR9100 in my last 2 diesels, it has definitely improved smooth running and a little improvement on mpg. It has very good reviews.

Never used any oil adatives in any of my volvos, use the correct oil and change it when the engine is nice and hot. I used to think changing the oil regular would be beneficial but I think modern oil is that good now you just don’t need to. My VW is on 25k long life service and now has 116,000 miles on it and isn’t even 3 years old. No engine troubles at all. I would probably be happy to run my Volvo to its full 18,000 service interval also.

I use liqui moly engine flush at oil change time, after use the oil stays cleaner for longer and mine also had the chuffing/tug boat noise which has much reduced now so clean oil and engine flush was good for my D5.
235k miles now and sweet running and slightly more pokey after cleaning the maf and egr.
