Thanks for the swirl arm advice. I think I'll see how it goes with the arm re-connected. I might even try a new original arm without resorting to the 'nail fix' yet. I will get a bump stop tho'. Is it a case of fabricating one or is there anyone out there making and selling them?

I've got the car up on jacks and had a look at where the turbo hose meets the turbo at the back of the engine. There's no sign of a leak, no obvious split, broken seals or leaking oil. Could there still be a problem there and do I need to investigate further or should I be looking elsewhere for something more obvious.

Thanks again for all your help. I'll have another look after a cup of tea, a bit more head scratching and hopefully some further guidance from you guys.

Excuse my knowledge and correct me if I'm wrong about the following.

I see how the turbo draws air from the airbox along the plastic hose that goes over the top of the engine and generates pressurised air that goes through the hose under the engine to the intercooler, out the other side, up to the EGR (whatever that does) and into the engine manifold.

A visual (not easy due to it being so tight) and handling check hasn't identified anything obvious and there's no oil. Although this might be explained by it only just developing the fault and not yet leaking.

Before I go taking bits off, is it not always obvious? Is there an easy way to check. I haven't run it yet but I guess without it being under load that won't tell me anything anyway.

The bump stop id just a piece of metal strap, like a roof strap, bent and screw into the screw of the stepper motor. With a rubber bumper glued or pulled thru a hole if it has a grommet end.

The seals.... i know its a pain, but, get someone to rev it while your under, or take them off to check. The smallest rip is a leak.

if you are interested in doing so much work yourself then invest in VIDA and DICE. This is the Volvo diagnoostic software complete with parts list and full disassembly / reassemble instructions for everything.

It will save you more than it cost on the very first time you use it!
