Default How long should one keep insurance documentation

I am a hoarder - I have bank statements going back to the 90s and beyond.

However I am having to undergo behavior training to curb my habit of keeping long out of date documention.

So the question is :

How long should one keep motor insurance documention after the insurance period has ended?

Thanks for any comments

I'd say once one period has ended and you get new documents for the next, you can bin the old.

That's what I do.

I'm like you!

I have all sorts of paper documents going back many years and keep asking myself why.

I've never needed to refer back to any of it; but pure fear and cold sweats when I know that I'll throw something away and need it again the day after the bin men have been!

When I shed this mortal coil, one day, someone else can sort it all out. After all, I won't be around to worry about what ought to be kept and what can be thrown away!

Once I get my new insurance documents I bin the old, not much use once they've expired.
Any bank statements and other financial documents I usually keep for 10 years, recommended 6-7 years I think.

Thanks everybody - I will go for two years before consigning the paperwork to the shreder that turns the paper into confetti.

That is a very good policy, 'bobby2000'. The 7 year cutoff applies for HMRC and IHT purposes.

Regards. John.

Statute of limitations - Tort (the period anyone can bring a claim against you) is 6yrs... I keep mine that long in case someone crawls out of a hole.

Thats the longest period of time.. there are shorter periods for injury claims of 3 years, and longer ones for specific areas of law.

But 6 is a good rule of thumb, if you where to be unlucky.

Interestingly I'm just trawling through old computer files to recover credit card numbers for a PPI claim. I've found numbers from closed accounts in the 1990's, but there are two closed accounts from the 1980's where I have no paper or electronic records. Ditto mortgages and car loans.

my first job was as a junior salesman at Currys (1968) and all the HP/Credit agreements included a payments protection policy covering sickness, unemployment and death. It was just included in the credit charges with no premium shown, nor any opt-out facility. Everybody paid it by default.
I left in 1979 and nothing had changed, but it must have done sometime, once they stopped funding their own in-house credit. probably when Dixons took them over....anybody know?
