I replaced it because of a mechanical fault, it would no longer retract. There was no srs issue until I swapped it, so I think it's down to me disconnecting the plug when I changed it.

Same applies to abs light - the washer light is usually the last one that works 🤣

Cheers

http://www.myvolvolibrary.info/Tech_...DataPocket.pdf

Page 5 of that pdf explains the VIN code, 10th character will be either S, T or V for 95, 96 and 97 MY respectively. I know you said it's a 96 car but it could be a late 95MY registration that had lurked in a showroom for several months.

That sounds suspiciously like the pretensioner that's at fault, or the wiring to it. Might be worth checking that you reconnected it, if you did that it has gone fully home in the connector and generally check for broken wiring.

If the fault is still present, the fault code won't reset at all or if it does, will only be momentary until the system does a self check.

As for jerry-rigging the warning lights, it's all very well until you do that and a fault appears on the other system you've slaved from. Had a car once where the ABS warning light would come on with the engine management light - was a right pain when a Lambda sensor failed during the MoT as it threw up an ABS fault apparently.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply. It's definitely 1996 from the vin plate.
You're right about bodging the lights, I'll only do it temporarily if I run out of time trying to fix it for the MOT. I should have some time Thursday evening to have a proper look at the seatbelt and check the pretensioner.

I removed the trim this afternoon and checked the seatbelt. The pretensioner hasn't operated and the wire looks fine and is correctly connected. I've found another thread mentioning that the srs system is on pin 7 of the obd2 connector on their 1995 car. They mentioned needing vol-fcr to interrogate it. I think I might have to admit defeat and find a specialist/dealer to reset it.

Yes, without the special tool you can't reset the light for bad luck.
Don't ask me how I no, Kay

Just thought I'd complete the thread. I got the light reset by a friend of a friend, he used some delphi software he'd got. It just stated 'belt tensioner interrupted' prior to being reset.
I think it's clear that the later cars can't be reset without appropriate software, like my 1996 car.
