I don't know if modern engines are any different, but 50 odd years ago I was taught to drain oil when hot as all the impurities are then held in suspension. I still do!

In my view common sense says 'hot'! Would not do otherwise even if a diesel fuel engine all of which I have always detested in a car. Bob

Always after a run, with the engine still warm.

Always hot - the oil is thinner so empties faster but has also loosened the dirt in the engine which it will carry out with it.
Same goes for gearbox and diff oil, do it hot as it comes out easier and brings more dirt with it.
