The service schedule says every 2 years or 24k miles Jim but most people tend to leave it longer than that. If you have or can get one of those brake fluid testers, that will tell you what sort of condition the fluid is in and if you should change it.

The fluid recommended by Volvo is DOT 4 (sometimes listed as DOT IV) and i've used this a few times with no problems :

https://www.smithandallan.com/produc...4-brake-fluid/

Also used this one as well :

https://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/c...0270&0&cc5_179

Current promo code is WEEKEND37 which should drop the price somewhat and then if you opt for free delivery it keeps the cost down and you get it nearly as quick as if you pay for delivery.

I usually leave it 3 years but I only do ~5000 miles a year.

Don't think there is a best brand? Doubt you'll notice any difference unless doing track days all the time.

Capacity is 0.6 litres. I bought 2 litres to flush it and do the clutch too, had 0.5 left over.

brake fluid is hygroscopic (it absorbs moisture). Left too long you get two problems: water damage (pitting usually) inside calipers and cylinders; and in extreme use, vapour leading to brake pedal sinking to the floor along with your soul...
