Well, I've managed to improve the volume control crackle and noise a lot by doing very little! I read that you should turn the knob from the off position to it's highest volume position very fast and then back down to the off position as fast as you can about 5 times (obviously with ignition turned off so as not to blow your speakers although I have had CD players which work without ignition so I don't think you can do this on those types). Well, I did a few more times than 5 and lo and behold it has made quite a difference! I expect it must dislodge some dust?

So sorry Dave for not giving you credit, as you have witnessed at least twice lately I am a bit brain dead after a long day at work! Thanks for the great tip, I am going to do it some more, maybe I can get it a lot better!

No worries Ellie, i thought when you said you'd read about giving it some exercise you meant my suggestion.
Now you've got it going again, don't go too mad on giving it more exercise, sometimes you can do more damage as there might be a bit of dirt/grit that was causing the problem. Now it's dislodged and moved, it works again. More exercise might pick it up again and damage the whole track - please don't ask how i know this! If you do need to do it some more, then you need to hunt the offending item out and give it a squirt of contact cleaner to help wash away any dirt/grit etc.

Yes, Apologies to Ellie for hijacking/ off topic. I'm slowly getting the way the forum works- I generally read rather than post. I think the expression is 'start a new tread'? I'll read the rules. And I hope that potentiometer keeps behaving.
And I'll go quiet on the code reader stuff too! Dave- good luck with the pump- hopefully it does the trick. I'll be very interested to hear the outcome. When I'm mobile again (back gone), I'll be trying the starter flick to see how it impacts on hot start times. |
